Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I just have to ask, we had started out with Cuckoos, 3 hens and 1 Rooster. We hatched out 3 batches last year, and on the 3rd batch we got 10 Pure Black poulets and no roosters. the rest were all Cuckoo's does anyone have a Pure Black Maran Rooster? I would like to play around with this new set of chicks. Also can anyone explain what caused this out of 3 sets of eggs. the 3rd batch has black chicks? was it the hobovator? humidity ? Egg rocker? or just plain genetics and climate. were kinda stumped here

Somewhere along the way you ended up with a rooster with only one copy of the barring genes and that would give you 25% solid pullets. I have a Splash Cuckoo roo with one copy of the barring gene and should end up with SOLID BLUE pullets from that cross.

BTW if you breed the solid black pullets to your current roo you will get some solid black roos. Theory 50% would be barred (25% pullets and 25% roos) 50% would be solid (25% pullets and 25% roos)
I have no idea what you are asking there

Finally had a fair weather day to get some pictures of the two marans I mentioned a few days ago. The cockerel in the pictures is about 18 weeks old and currently molting- hence the short feathers around the back of his neck.... I know, not the greatest time to be taking pictures- but oh well! He is a bugger for getting good natural stances. He usually has his neck feathers all puffed out and neck stretched out on alert. Even with treats....... anyways.... here is Cowboy

The only thing I can see not to like is the comb on all these Marans. I would have to test mate these first. Something just does not look right.

I agree on the combs. We'll see.... I may just end up putting my EE roo over her.
The only pullet I have with a decent comb is the blue I got from pink, who is clean legged and lacks copper lol. She is Cowboy's sister aka hatch mate. Not sure if they have the same mother.

This is our Rooster my son named him Blue Bird. We are keeping him, I have one more I am keeping. He is just now getting his copper on his back and his wings. We had to cut his wings because he was getting out. We are building a new chicken coop to separate him with our 2 hens that are blue.

The hen in the center of the picture is our second blue hen.

Can't wait until I start getting eggs from them which should be very soon, I just want them separate so I can hatch them and get rid of my mixed chickens. I love Black and Blue Copper marans but want to keep them a clean breed and keep the true.
