Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Here is our only Black Copper Maran that turned out to be a pullet. She has a beautiful green sheen to her feathers and her head is starting to come in with red feathers. Are these typical colours for a BCM, or is it undesirable?

The black and copper coloring in the feathers are appropriate.
Take a good look at this one's feet (toes). IF they are yellow hued, then that is not good.

Where did you find that?? I don't see it on the BYC smiley list.

Photobucket....

Search for smilie waiting and you will see this guy.

Then you can import the image using the "Insert Image" button on BYC.
You will need to copy one of the three codes for the smilie. I can't tell you which because I never remember. I just try until I get it. I THINK it is the direct link code, but it could be one of the other two codes....

Hello all ..... I am a newbie to the chicken habit
D.gif
with 3 and just got 21 more. I had 4 given to me when I was not AT ALL prepared to have chickens. We live on a small farm and I was going to let them free range all the time, which is how they had been living, roosting in the trees and such. Within 5-6 weeks they all had either been killed, stolen or just plain 'disappeared'. I was so disappointed that I started going through chicken withdrawls.

I talked my husband into letting me get 3 pullets that were a Cinnamon Queen, Blue Laced Wyandotte cross and a RIR cross (she has blue legs). He built me a really nice chicken coop and decided if we were going to have 3 we might as well have 20 or 25, as the coop he built would hold them, and sell eggs. Well, yesterday we bought a small flock of 20 and she gave us a huge Cookoo Marans rooster. I hadn't really wanted a rooster, but with that many hens I decided it might be nice to have a rooster to watch over them. I have been looking to read about the CM's, but don't see much posted about them. I mainly see the BCM's posted about. Am I at the right forum, or is there another place I might get more information and feedback about my Cookoo Marans.

Another stupid question I just HAVE to ask, because I don't know the answer. I suspect what it is but want to know for sure. What are hatchling eggs? If it is fertilized eggs that are sent out for someone else to hatch? how do they survive without being under a chicken? Thanks.

There is a Cuckoo thread but this one covers ALL marans.

Hatching eggs are fertilized eggs. Hatching eggs are viable without a hen for many days. Usually under 2 weeks, but I have hatched eggs over a month old. As long as the eggs are kept cool and don't get too hot they hatch just fine in an incubator after they are collected, like a hen when she makes a clutch to hatch.

I wanted to share this with my goat loving friends.... my neighbor lost her goat of 6 years yesterday and her name was number 3...... do you see why????

Going to move some Marans pullets today.... I hope. Just the last bit of culling from my new pullets.

Cute goatie Donna. I've been under the weather with whatever it is going around town, so all pen sorting has been put on hold as I've been home from work three days . I sound rather like someone that's got a 10 pack a day habit at the moment, but hoping I'll get over this asap. Got any more pics for me to look at of what you are holding back lady? I'm gonna be working on them here once I get to feeling a bit better. Thinking I'm going to cull out a couple more females than I had originally thought, but am wanting to get down to just the best of the best here.

One guess about what's on my mind tonight! Yup, strutting penguin babies! Just wondering what everyone's plans for starting hatching are. I know some down south are doing winter hatching. I'm not planning on starting til Feb.
