Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

We left the camera on for a few days and I checked it this morning. I got 2 different raccoons, 2 different foxes, and a bunch of possums!! Many showed up at the same time or a half hour apart starting around 10pm to 6am. The possums show up first then the raccoons, then the fox and then all show up sporadically throughout the rest of the night.
Da*& girl, you got a wild life reserve going on at your place. They are getting fed gourmet meals on a regular basis too.
KEEP US updated with what works with taking out these predators.

...........all we caught was a no good neighbor syphoning gas out of our vehicle. Definitely was not what we were expecting to see.

Don,

I am NOT feeling the Love! You have posted a few times recently and have yet to say "Hi" to your friend in the South LOL...

HEY PINK (Kim) . . .
How's the moving progressing. It sure sounds like you need some new friends.

VICKI,
I have the jonesing for hatching out of my system. I did 4 staggered hatches.
I have just a few birds to show for all my work. I been working like a dog trying to hatch some chicks from my one delaware rooster that is having fertility issues - SERIOUS fertility issues... I ended up with only 1 chick from him after 4 hatches...UGGGGHH. OK, so I am REALLY DONE with this guy!

I tried hatching some pullet eggs, the itty bitty first laid pullet eggs, from my Buff leghorns. That did not go very well either. I ended up with 2 buffs from that hatch.

I tried hatching MORE buff leghorn eggs a week later and that hatch was very successsfull. I hatched 100% of the eggs I set. I hatched some delaware chicks in that hatch too. They were from my other delaware roo.

Fourth and last hatch. . . . Got me some more delaware chicks and ONE marans chick. These were the first eggs laid after the molt and most were not fertile. I just grabbed them and stuck them in the incubator with the delaware eggs.

NOW the marans have STOPPED laying again... WTH? ? ? So, I am DONE hatching until the marans decide to start showing me some loving and start laying again!

Final chick count after for staggered hatches ...

1 delaware chick from the infertile roo
14 delaware chicks from the roo who knows what he is doing LOL
1 marans chick. (Any idea how odd it feels amongst all the delawares and buffs?? )
15 buff leghorn chicks.

Not an impressive total, but it is what it is... At least I have confirmed without a doubt that the one delaware roo can NOT get the job done and has been pulled from the breeding pens.

I have a quick question for all the Maran experts, and please forgive my chicken genetics ignorance. Will crossing my Black Copper Maran roo with a Golden Cuckoo Maran hen produce sex link chicks?

Yes. All the males produced from this cross will be barred/cuckoo. They should have a fairly large white spot on the top of their head at hatch. The females should be solid black.

Vicki~ Keep your head up girl! Sorry that you lost a couple of birds. How's that Luella girl doing? :)

Math Ace~ No fair talking about the lonely Marans chick and not posting a photo. :old

You guys and gals that are hatching or have just finished hatching know that you should be posting photos of fuzzy butts for us to gaga over. ;)

Math~ We only have 1 neighbor that is a total _ _ _ _ - _ _!
We are still planning on moving and I would like to do it sooner rather than later....but our oldest son has recently moved home with our grandson and is going through a messy custody battle now with his ex. DH would like to stay as long as it takes to make sure our son and grandson are settled and on their feet and this custody thing is over.

How soon I forgot how very exhausting it is to chase a 14 mos. old baby around. Gram-munster (that's me :) ) is doing alot of the babysitting right now so that our son can go to work..............it is safe to assume that I am totally spent by about 3 in the afternoon!

Hey Lady,

Luella is doing well. I have 5 blue copper females including her (all express copper, some more than other) that I'll be using in the spring. I'm very excited about them as they each have something I really like. I have one that's definitely laying again, but not sure which one yet. I don't have another free day til this weekend to do some sorting and etc. I'm thinking I should still be on schedule to set eggs and have them hatch mid to end of Feb.

I've put my 3 pygmy girls in with the buck, assuming all goes well, I'll have little fuzzy turdlets running around about May.
