Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!! My little Birchen pullet that was missing is here and doing well, hungry and cold, but doing well.

She was under a medium to small sized rubbermaind tote that I use for putting their once a week special gruel into. It somehow fell off of the top of the old rabbit hutch where I had set it after they had eaten all their goodies stuff and rinsed out and managed to apparently fall right on top of her trapping her under it.

I didn't even think of moving it and looking under it for her.

I picked it up tonight to put their yum yums in it and SURPRISE! I think I must of jumped about 6ft when she shot out from there the second I moved it.

After my heart left my throat, I caught her and gave her the once over, she seems fine and wanted down immediately. She went directly to the food dish with the yummy gruel in it. I continued to watch her for a few minutes before coming in and when she finally finished eating she got a drink of water and then pecked her brother on the head.......me thinks this is a good sign.

Thank you everyone for the positive thoughts that she was ok........it worked, I feel so bad that she trapped for 2 days, atleast she seems ok. I will continue to watch her for the next couple of days.
I'm very glad she is ok lady! I saw you had posted about her the other day and was so bummed for you.

Vivi~ I didn't know you had geese! That's wonderful! What kind?

I have some Marans that do the same thing and their eggs get darker as they lay, then they start to lighten before they go on break. I think it is just that every chicken is different.

Thank you Hon, I was wondering. I have Sebbies, some American Buff, some mixed breeds.

I'm so happy she is ok. Thanks Vicki.

Good to see ya back again. Hope all is going good.

I saved all my own seeds from last years garden and will have 2 huge gardens this year plus many raised garden beds. Getting ready to construct a moveable hoop house and get some cold weather early veggies started under lights in the shop. DH loves when I take up space in the his shop for brooder space and veggies. What can I say....it's that time again, so be it. :D

Thanks Vivi! I am estatic! I only have 3 Birchen pullets and then I thought I was down to 2. Phewwww! I just hope that she will be okay and that she didn't get to cold....it's been down into the low 20's over the last week and the last couple of days have been down to 28 and 30. She couldn't get to any food or water so that worries me.

Finally got a bit of break in the cold weather. It was about 40 today, and the birds were loving it! The pens are still pretty mucky from the rain the other day, so have spent the day planning the garden for this year. Anyone else gonna have a nice sized garden? How about a chicken garden?

I HOPE to finally get a garden this year. I really want a chicken garden too. I will need some guidance with exactly what that is

I just kinda wing it on the garden. I have planned them, but my time is too limited these days so I will just plant the usual. I need to clean the garden spot from 2 years ago.... still have the tomato stakes up

Things are going alright....just decided I needed a project to get my mind off of this cabin fever!

I'd love to see what you end up making for your moveable hoop house. I use small ones over my rows when necessary, but am doing research now to be able to do more fall/winter gardening to extend the year, so am looking for practical ideas for protection. Are you going to be selling your veggies again? I'm still not sure what my time will be looking like once I get closer to spring, so am not sure if I'll be doing a ton of selling or just play it by ear.
For sure I'm going to try my hand at growing mangels for the animals. I have several other plants I'll grow for them, but just have to decide where to put that part of the garden.

One of my neighbors has Sebbies and they are beautiful! I'm thinking of going down to their house to see if I can get some hatching eggs when they start laying. :)
