Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Could any one give me some helpful criticism on my two FWM pullets (12 wks) or are they to young? I plan on breeding them in a year or so and was just curious if I could make some quality offspring form these two. (of course the rooster that I get will gave to be considered) .

HI! Welcome to the Marans thread!

The young Wheatens are too young to make a judgement on their quality. Give them a couple more months.
The male looks to have maybe too high of a tail. Do you have more photos?
The hen's coloring is my favorite things about Wheatens...I just love that body color.
Thanks, so apart form the roosters high tail they are pretty nice birds?

I just hatched a mixed batch of Marans. The eggs were split between BCM, White Marans, and Golden Cuckoo Maran. The breeder didn't mark the eggs, and now I'm confused. The White Maran chicks are obvious, but there are a few that are either BCM or Golden Cuckoo, with varying shades of copper, black, yellow, and gray. Some of them have yellow dots on their heads. Is there something specific I should be looking for to tell them apart? Sorry, I haven't hatched Golden Cuckoo Marans before.

We can try to help better with pictures BUT BCM should be black with white bellies and wing tips. Golden Cuckoos will ALL have spots. They are AUTOSEXING. The roos are much lighter in color like a milk choc brown color and the pullets should be darker. Someone posted a link above so you can look at what golden cuckoos should look like. Keep in mind not everyone selling Marans has good Marans.

thank you for your response!

Well darn it! I thought maybe the broody wagon was something to help encourage the ole girls! LOL! I have one EE hen that I know will go broody because I bought her last year with 5 chicks. She is a fantastic mom. Had four roosters out of the five though! So much for my first attempt at having more hens.. I am hoping that when this hen goes broody again my Maran girls will "catch the bug" too! I'm hoping the girls can learn by example.
