I have got to head out soon, but I got a pullet egg the other day I got a pullet egg...... it must have been the DARKEST egg I have gotten yet.

If I could just get these darker eggs to hatch as well as the others too

My Marans are trying to be broody, and the others are slacking off in the laying. I have gone from 13 eggs a day to 7-8 now. Soon I will do one more round of hard culling. My poor roo needs a break from 16 pullets LOL

Vicki I think I am going to use Erik with some of these new pullets to see what I get. Some times I look at him and all I can see are his little faults, but other time he really looks so good. It will just be a test anyway.

I set pullet eggs with no problem as well

I set pullet eggs all the time as well and have not had any problems with them. I agree with Flgarden...the chicks may be slightly smaller, but they do catch up pretty quick and do just fine.

Have any of you seen this listing? They are supposed to be Black copper Marans...the roo has a marans look but all that orange on the breast...is he even a black copper marans? Just curious what you guys think.

I saw that, I wouldn't buy them. The male could be carrying Black tailed buff but poorly colored or something else. Also scroll down on the thingy where they have posted pics of him and look good at his comb in that second to last pic.....is that a humongous sprig or what???

edited to say okay I can see there is a pic that has a closeup of his head...sprigsville towards the back of his comb.

Yeah, the combs are a real mess. I was interested in the color of the roo. I did not know there were black tailed buff Marans! LOL!
Usually I am focusing on wheaten, more recently the blues, so I guess I just never stumbled across that variety. I knew you guys would know what was going on there though

You have done the right thing on the eggs. First come here and ask questions as a lot of the egg sellers have no idea of what they have.

I'm new with Marans. I got 5 French Marans as chicks in December, and am still a little uncertain about who is a rooster and who is a hen. There are 3 BCM, 1 blue copper, and one blue splash. I am almost certain that of the 3 BCM, 2 are roosters. I would like to order some pullets but I see mostly the cuckoos. I'm hoping that one of the hens will raise some chicks. Should I include the cuckoos? Any advice?

This is our friend's roo that we compared to the Maran's 1st place roo at the show. While Peter Orvalle's was awesome, we think that hers is beautiful too. We are trying to talk her into showing him. We are using him for stud against our 4 pullets.

It's folks like this that make keeping the color varieties pure such hard work. I've actually seen worse than this on eBay.

I'm happy that there is a place like BYC to help people.
