Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I know asking egg color questions is opening a can of worms but I'm running into an interesting problem with my Splash Marans eggs.

The first day they are laid one looks purple and the other looks light brown. If I leave them on the counter for a few days while collecting others to set I hardly recognize them. They both get darker. I know Splash have a long way to go before getting excellent egg color but its a work in progress. These girls are with a rooster that came out of a very dark egg.

Day 1:
Top Row : EE, White Rock, EE
Bottom Row: Splash Marans, Delaware, Splash Marans

Day 3:
EE, Splash Marans, Splash Marans, Delaware

What happened?

Hi folks
I have 3 beautiful Blue copper Marans ROOS that are 4 weeks old that I can't have here I would love for them to go to a GOOD home FREE.They came from Sterling Sue.These would need to be pick up I am in Ma. Please let me know.

Well I wonder if I could explain a road trip to the DH? Most likely wishful thinking, but I would love to have one.

I MISS DEBBI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok got that off my chest.

Anyway, hows it going? You and Don got your 'bators going yet? Don should have his going...wasn't he getting eggs a week or so ago?

Looks like a couple of the girls are going to give me a few eggs......so hopefully pretty soon I can get them into the bator, but still must wait for them to clear out as I don't want to take any chances because of the Birchen male.

Eggs that are incubating right now....well......the Splash eggs from Raven are developing good, but the air cells are all over the place, we will see. I believe they were handled pretty rough in shipping. Keeping my fingers crossed.

It looks like the eggs I set from my girls, all but one have quit. Tis okay with me as I only set them on a whim and I was worried about that Birchen male in the first place, so...................

Daisy Doo my goose has started laying and you know what that means don't you?

Goslings!!!!!! I love Goslings!!!!

I sold the Birchen pullet with the sprig as a layer. She went to a wonderful man who just wanted a pretty bird. Culled the other cockerel finally too. Now have the 2 pullets left and the male. Neither one of the 2 remaining pullets are showing any signs of anything on their combs, but still waiting for one of them to start laying and for the other one who started laying a couple weeks ago to start back up again. She gave me 2 eggs and then nothing. I'm going to test mate them to the male (sibling) to see what happens with the sprig. Did I tell you I was wrong when I thought the male had a sprig as well? He does not, matter of fact he actually has a pretty nice comb so that is a good sign. Just hope that sprigs don't pop up in the single test matings.
I don't have the incubator going yet. I had a breach in the pens (goats helping me get doors to stalls open when they got out), so all the hens have to be cleared again from those areas. I have some other birds picking up laying, so will be starting with those while I wait. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

Sounds like things are coming together over there! Goslings are indeed so stinking cute, I just wish I had some space for them. If I did, I'd be going straight for the toulouse!

I'll be doing some more house clearing here in the next month or so. I have some birds that will make nice layers and need to thin out some various stock, so will go to sale the second weekend of March. I believe it will help me out significantly for being able to focus more. Also getting the garden going and will be planting hopefully this weekend. Its plenty cold outside at the moment tho. Luckily I put some hooprows up to start thawing the ground.

My maran girl had been laying a little over a month and stopped?

She's been awesome laying about 5 a week. Well if she doesn't lay today that will be 4 days and no egg. Should I worry that she's egg bound or is this normal?

Have you made any changes in the coop? Such as removing a bird or adding a bird? Sometimes Marans can be persnickity and the smallest changes can make them stop laying. Chances are she is still getting things in gear with her laying pattern as she is a new layer.

One of my young Black Birchens started laying about a month ago, gave me 2 eggs and then stopped laying for the last couple of weeks and then blammo...yesterday she started laying again.

I worked outside in the coops and the gardens all day yesterday, planted some John Smit green tulips...I absolutely can't wait for them to come up. Set up some hoop covers over my raised beds. Remodeled one of the coops to better suit my needs for breeding. Tore one coop down, saved all the necessaries off of it and put the rest on the burn pile. Time to get things organized and spiffed up I tell ya.
Planned the chicken garden and set up to start seeds....must get this done this weekend. Never enough time!

Amen...never enough time indeed. Its catching tho, once you get going, it seems like it snowballs as long as one can stay focused haha
Sounds like you were really productive. I have sooo much to do, and still in that overwhelmed place, but hope today will help alot.
