Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank you! I'm not really interested in getting more birds, just vaguely startled that the one thing that Marans are really known for, mine didn't seem to do! The Cuckoo, she looks as much like a Barred Rock as anything, to my eyes.

i will in the morning ive put them all to bed but i will take pics of the ones i paired up thinking it was roo and pullet thank you so much from all the pics ive seen the hens have copper necks and the roos have copper down there backs so im kinda????
Its hard to tell on your photos, but is there color on the back?

When you do become interested in some, make certain to get them from a qualified breeder who has egg shells on site to show you.

Of course, if you bought older birds, then there may be hope! They may start laying darker after a molt.

no just neck and small amount on breast so far but they are only 6 weeks old so i dont know what they will end up like i have one that has some copper on the saddle area its the biggest and is outside thats why pics will have to wait till morning they all have feathered legs/feet and they are from the bev line pure blooded so im told and thats from a reputable specialty breeder

I got my Birchen Roos!!!! I think I like them, but we will find out when I can get a good look at them tomorrow. They are about 5 months old so I think they still have some changes coming.

Awesome, spoken like a true chicken addict! Can't wait to see them lady. I was admiring some of the birds I had out on the lawn today and soooo can't wait to be able to collect eggs. I know its just a few more days til I can, but I'm so anxious!

Well they are in a dog carrier, so I could not see much, NO CREAM or GOLD. Feathered legs, Silver where it should be nice darker face (looks really good with that silver) nice looking combs. I am hoping more silver will come in as they get older like the copper do, but either way they will be just fine for me to start with. Since they are older I can get started with some breedings pretty soon

What do you plan on doing with them?

Making some Birchens..... what else? I have some cuckoo pullets that are more birchen looking than they should so I am going to see what I can get. My cuckoos are nice sized big girls, egg color is not great but I can work with that. I am not using the birchen pullets in the cuckoo pen and thought I would play and make me some birchens, without gold I hope.
