Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

You all probably have hatched a few BCM out before, but I thought I'd post mine anyway because you just can't get enough Marans chick hatching. Enjoy!

Quote: I don't understand what autosomal barring is, but no it has nothing to do with cuckoos. I have had it in my Rocks and my coppers. It is not black and white barring. In the coppers it was copper and black barring. In the rocks it was blue and light blue.

I can't find the picture of the coppers I had with autosomal barring. Maybe someone else like Pinkchick has some pics. I know she has had it pop up too. I don't have the hens that it was coming from and have not seen it since.

I'm so glad I found this Marans link!! I bought 10 Cuckoo Marans--came home with 9--they then gave me a Black Copper Marans (she is wonderful-the sweetest little girl ever)! I bought (or so I thought) all hens. Well as it turns out 4 are roos!!! OMG The hens seem to have yellow legs and the roos have white legs. Can someone tell me is this how to tell the roos from hens?? And the roos are very MEAN!!!

WELCOME! There is also a Cuckoo thread. The male cuckoos should look WHITER than the pullets and will have bigger combs. ALL marans should have white legs. My guess is someone used a barred rock somewhere in the breeding, but could have been anything really. My guess too is that the eggs will be much lighter. I would not breed them with yellow legs.... even the ones with white legs they can carry the yellow and not express it. I also would not breed mean roos.

Donna, Go back and read your last post. Where does the statement that all Marans should have WHITE legs come from ?

Autosomal Barring

Here is a tidbit that I copied and borrowed from this website
http://www.nsppa.ca/documents/poultry_genetics2.pdf

(this is a nice site as it puts the basics in layman terms)

"Genetics of patterns
New research has indicated that several major patterns in chickens are not due to independent genes as
previous believed. The single lace, double lace, autosomal barring (horizontal penciling) and spangling
are now thought to be due to interactions with the Pg gene (pattern gene). For a review of the original
literature, see W.C. Carefoot in Crawford’s volume. Single lace pattern can be obtained with the genes:
Ml (melanotic), Pg (pattern gene) and Co (Columbian) on either eb, ey or eWh background genes.
Double lace pattern is obtained from the single lace pattern by removing the Co gene. Spangling is
obtained with Db (dark brown), Ml (melanotic), Pg (pattern gene) on either the E or eb background.
Penciling is obtained with the Pg gene on the eb or e+ background. Autosomal barring (sometimes called
horizontal penciling) is obtained with the Db and Pg genes. The table below, originally constructed by
Brian Reeder, is intended to serve as a guide to the patterns seen in chicken plumage. A similar table is
found in Poultry Breeding and Genetics, R.D. Crawford, ed., Table 5.3, page 127."

(P.S., to my knowledge, Pg is a gene that is not suppose to be in the Marans genetics)

This is a chick that showed autosomal barring.

Mornin Don, how's the hatch coming along? I should probably have my 2nd hatch ready to go in by the end of the month and should give me a month or so between so can start the culling through the first batch. I already have a separate brooder for those that are not staying and should have another few to add before I sell them.

Morning Don and Vicki!
Humidity is holding great!!!!!!! Got 5 pips out of 8 eggs, not 7 as I had previously stated. I was laying in front of the 'bator and counting pips and it dawned on me that there are 8 eggs. Sheesh.....I've handled them every single day and still thought 7. Can we say....."DER!"
My head is not all here right now.
Thanks for the seeds, I will be looking forward to them! YAY!
