Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I was hoping to candle today too, but time got away from me. I can't wait to hear a report!

I need to move some chicks. Sales have been really slow. Someone replied to an ad today and I made her a deal she could not refuse if she too all my olive eggers LOL. I had several people as for them and then when I had chicks POOF they were gone! Oh well.

I should have some chicks coming this week. Some Partridge and Silver Penciled Rocks and some Ams too. Kinda excited.... but I don't have any room for more chicks

I think I'll probably candle Friday or Saturday so it will be easier to tell what I've got going on in them.

You are out of olive eggers then, or just the chicks? Are you ordering them from somewhere, or do you mean you are hatching those chicks?

I have one girl making me olive eggers, but most have straight combs.

Might sell her as an EE. I still have a few younger chicks. I might grow them up to pullets then sell them. I didn't have a pen set up to make them so I got some egg from other people to hatch. Had pretty OK hatches on the Olive eggers... .just couldn't sell the chicks.

Question! I know that solid birds from coppers are still coppers... does the same hold true for Birchens? If the silver is not expressing are they still birchen?

If you follow the way that silver works when crossing onto a solid, and selectively mate, you do get some that have the true solid genes, but if you are working with the birchens and just have birds that don't show, but have not used birds you know to carry the solid genes, then yes they are birchens because they genetically are not the same, even tho they are both silver based.

sorry, had to go shower, truck day at work, then a full rest of the day planting and taking care of animals. I'm pooped. I don't blame you for thinning down. I think I'd like the olive eggers for my layer pen, but don't know if I would make a breeding pen of them, mostly cause I just don'thave the space

The good thing about Olive Eggers is you don't really have to have a pen. I can toss a few Am pullet in the Marans pen and vise versa.

I just like the first cross... don't like to fool with all the other ODD colors that come in the next cross. Just nice olive eggs that is what I like. Love the extra colors in the basket. But I don't have a layer pen
