Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Not many people could tell me about my Marans on the "what breed/gender is this" post, so I thought I might check in here. I have 2 white Marans that I hatched from eggs from a breeder.
They look very different to me and I was hoping someone on here might be able to tell me more. We do not plan on showing or breeding them (except to have more layers). Just a fun backyard flock for the kids.

Here is our fella Leroy who we would like to keep as our main rooster from those that have hatched.

And here is the other one. We thought she was a pullet and now we are thinking he is a cockerel at 12 weeks old.

Here is a full body shot of her, you can see Leroy in the background.

She/He has 1/2 webbed (or at least I think that is what it is called) feet. And her legs and beak are white/pink, not yellow like Leroys. She/He also has long back tail feathers like our other pullets her age where as Leroy has hardly any.

Any information or thoughts on these two birds would be greatly appreciated.

Well I am sorry to say Marans of any color are not to have yellow legs. I would not go forward with any of these if they came from the same hatch. The ones that do not show the yellow leg will carry it. They will not be SOP. However they should make great layers for you.

Looks like my Light Brahmas minus the black necklace/tail . . . or a white leghorn/brahma cross? Were the eggs you hatched them from dark?
They were from dark brown eggs. I don't think the person I got them from had either of those breeds. :(

Really? That is good to know! The breeder I got them from labeled it a white Marans. Hmmmm... slightly frustrating. Can you tell if either is a male or female? I am almost positive the first is a male. I wasn't sure of what to make of their difference in tail feathers.

Question for you more experienced breeders...are these white marans or splash? They are out of our blue copper hen and silver blue copper rooster.

Ripster are you talking about my splash chicks that I just posted?

I think Ripsters talking about my two white ones.

Ironically I watched the second one crow this morning! So you are definitely right. Both males. Thank you for your help and input guys!
