From just the one picture, I like the conformation of your male. His tail angle is correct, he has a nice, long back (I like a long back in this breed), and he has the uphill topline that he should have; it may be a bit TOO steep, but it's tough to tell as he is in mid-step in this pic. I'm unsure on his eye color, can't really see it well enough to comment. Although is shank feathering is a bit sparse, I don't believe it would be marked as a fault by any means - I was told by a judge that as long as the feathers overlap each other on the shank, and there are no gaps in the feathering (meaning you can't see shank scales between the feathers), that is sufficient. The feathering does appear to go down the outside toe, as well, though again, I can't be compeletely sure by the picture.Could I please get some opinions on these GCM chicks. I am still learning, so it would be helpful to get some feedback and pointers . . Thanks!![]()
What I am really liking about my Marans is that they are calm, confident and smarter than some of my other chicken breeds. Really looking forward to their dark eggs too!
My rooster chick~
A couple of my pullets~

The two pullets have the kind of shank and foot feathering that I have always bred for myself. Everyone should look at the Langshan feathering and go from there. From just the one picture, I like the conformation of your male. The female on the left is a possibility, though her shank feahteirng is too heavy; bred to the male, the offspring may have just the right amount. However, she appears to be "cow hocked" - possibly it's just because she is turning to her right. The other pullet appears to be quite roach backed and if she is, should not be used for breeding. I hope I'm wrong, because from what I can see, she appears to have a lovely underline.
Just my opinions, I am not an expert.
A breeder sold me these two Marans, She said they were Blond Salmon, But I have never heard of this. Also their coloring is differnet from each other, their feathering is different, they are both the same age born about june 16th, I can't even find anything online that talks about them. So I am wandering if they are some sort of mix or If there is some sort of genetic mess up in the breeding.
This is the golden salmon maran I got from the same breeder. I don't know if all 3 have the same parent stock or if they were different mothers or what. Cuz she only had one Golden Salmon Maran Rooster.
Wynette, I agree 100 %, when you get an opinion from a judge that is basically what you are getting. The best opinion is go to the Langshan SOP and take a look as that is what I am breeding for. Here are 2 examples that the judges showed at Crossroads 2011 as proper shank feathering for Marans:
And here is the highest-placed Marans from the APA Nationals last fall:
Many of the things in the SOP can be interpreted differently, shank feathering is one of them, I believe. Breed for whatever tickles your fancy, I say.
And I like both these alright so I must be missing something. Ellaborate??
Okay I can see how the one on the right has 'too much white' but what is up with the solid yellow legs? The one on the left doesn't scare me so much...
This one looks great to me. These legs have slate at the top at least. Am I missing something else??
I like the one on the far left as well-- I like eyebrows, but I would consider the one second in from left too. What do you predict for that one DM??
