Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Okay I can see how the one on the right has 'too much white' but what is up with the solid yellow legs? The one on the left doesn't scare me so much... This one looks great to me. These legs have slate at the top at least. Am I missing something else?? I like the one on the far left as well-- I like eyebrows, but I would consider the one second in from left too. What do you predict for that one DM??
And I like both these alright so I must be missing something. Ellaborate??
I missed this sorry. the group shot the second from the left might have too much copper. you can always test one like that. results might be different for different birds so you would have to see how it works at your place. yellow legs on day olds don't mean much. they can be yellow from the yolk. if they stay that way THEN you have a problem.

Never had an issue with leg colour once they grow up (Yet!).

Ashandvine, the chick in the 2nd picture grew up to be a very dark pullet with black on her red comb and wattles and what I am calling gypsy faced (I may be in err). I still have her in my egglaying flock. Will see if I can snap/post a pic. of her this evening.

Here is her chick pic. and her now:
that is a very gypsy face. well in her case the point is proved. but that may not be the case 100% of the time. not enough white and the chicks are over melenized. give it a try what can it hurt.....might help your breeding plan....it is mine.

what breed of maran is she? she's a pretty gal!
She is a Black Copper Marans. Her mom and dad who are a Dad/Daughter produce these gypsy faced offspring, pullets and cockerals. I find it attractive but it is not to SOP, I will not breed this pullet and have raised enough of her parents chicks to confirm that they will no longer be paired. She lays a nice 6 - 7 egg, her mom lays barely a 5. This is why it is so informative to test mate. I have read that egg colour is often lost in F'2's but is regained in F'3's and that is the case here. I get easily confused with the lineage stuff so hopefully I got that right!

this is my maran and I thought she was a black copper. but she doesn't look like yours. I am confused. new to chickens and didn't do much research on marans before we got these gals from a local farm. the other chicks we got were the only 2 to hatch and those were the ones I researched thinking more would hatch out! but we love our 3 marans. one is a splash I am told.

She looks like a possible Black Copper Marans. The one I posted does not have correct colour, too dark around the face, black in comb and wattles and no copper around her neck. When yours gets close to laying age, her comb and wattles will get much bigger and get red. I am seeing some odd looking fluff under her chin, if she has a beard, she is not a purebred, probably an Olive Egger which is a cross. Also, are her legs feathered? They should be as per the SOP.

What is SOP? Lady told me they could be French copper. But there was also a Americauna roo in their coop and she did say they could be mixed. though I would have to wait till they laid to figure it out. been trying to get an answer on here for awhile now so thanks for answering that! She and her black copper sister have some feathers on the legs. The splash maran has none.

I would say she is a mix then. she looks more like some olive eggers I have had. she will probably not lay olive eggs though since she has a straight comb. she will probably lay an egg more like a Marans. the copper down her chest is one thing telling me she is a mix. she should not be used to breed Marans.

I would assume they are all mixed.

sop standard of perfection. it is the chicken Bible.
