Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank you for the info on the chicks I posted last nite. At least I got that right, they were all boys! I am not concerned about their features, I will not be keeping them.

Here are six of the ones I am hoping are girls. When I compared them side by side, with the chicks on my previous post that were the same ages, these chicks had more feathering and longer tails than the others did. I'm sure that is not the only method of sexing! Can you comment about what you see that makes them girls or boys? If they are girls, I only want them for laying. I will not be breeding them. Thank you again!

Hi- Wondering if anyone can tell me if these are boys or girls (or a mix). I will be sending them back to the auction if they are all boys! (just like the last 10 are)
Thank you!

Thank goodness!! I was going to be so upset that all 20 turned out to be boys! I can certainly grow them out for a few weeks. Am I just looking for comb development at that time, or something else? Sorry to sound so stupid, I am so new to this breed (and chickens in general), I have no idea what to look for! Thank you!

I mostly rely on combs. I don't find anything else reliable.

Can you show an example of what to look for with the combs? Will it be that obvious to the untrained eye?

Thank you!
Hi, Sully - the best thing to do is to get yourself an SOP. There are many examples in it. A Marans should have 5 points. If you are interested in breeding for showing, most comb issues (other than DQ issues such as side sprigs) are very small point deductions, so most folks don't use them as cull issues.

OH, I'm sorry - you were asking about sexing via combs, yes? Sorry. I thought you were asking about SOP issues.

Hello everyone! I am new to French Black Copper Marans. I purchased some beautiful dark chocolate eggs on line (reportedly from Bev's stock but not from Bev herself) I ended up with 3 hens and 3 cockerels. Two of the hens and one of my roosters are completely black, no brown around the neck. All have sparse feathering on the legs. How do I get to be in the Marans Breeders Club.
