Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Pullet or cockerel? 5 weeks.... smallest comb which is flesh colored....

These are not great pictures but I was taking them by myself, and couldn't get better ones..... I know I have at least one definate roo, but hoping at least one is a pullet so I can hatch some eggs next year.

Upthecreek~

Shannon I hope you are doing fabulous! Thanks for the well wishes, right back at you my friend! How are you coming along with your Marans?

I am having a scary several days and have predator issues. We believe it is a mountain lion and from the thing I saw glaring back at me from in the coop run at four thirty in the morning with a spot light on it, was bigger than my 110 lb. lab.,for sure. I now only have 4 females and one roo. The predator also killed my most spoiled rotten goat. It killed both of my Blue Copper males, Lil Bill and the young male I was growing out from single matings earlier this year. I only have my Black Copper male, two Blue Copper pullets and two Splash Copper pullets. It even took my oldest and best hen, Darryl and her 3 month old pullet. It has been a fiasco. Whatever it is is big enough to rip doors off the side of the coop that are bolted shut, ripped the coop doors right off the coop. Dear husband thinks it may even be a bear, I have my doubts about that, however, upon talking with some of the neighbors we found out that one saw a mountain lion early one morning on the way to work last week in another neighbors pasture (two houses away). Me thinks it is probably the cougar.

Found 2 hens in a tree, took the 32 ft extention ladder to get them down.

Be Well!

Sorry about that....... but do not get discouraged, just get some more eggies.:D I had a year that it seems as though the only thing I could hatch was roosters. It just happens like that sometimes.
