Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sorry about that....... but do not get discouraged, just get some more eggies.

I had a year that it seems as though the only thing I could hatch was roosters. It just happens like that sometimes.
I bought chicks since I don't have an incubator! I have a bantam cochin hen that went broody and hatched out 4 cochin chicks and 2 of them are definate roos as well! She is actually raising the maran chicks too, since they are the same age. I guess I could get eggs and let her hatch them the next time she goes broody. Will have to talk to the lady that I got these chicks off of. Hmm.....

Shannon I hope you are doing fabulous! Thanks for the well wishes, right back at you my friend! How are you coming along with your Marans?

I am having a scary several days and have predator issues. We believe it is a mountain lion and from the thing I saw glaring back at me from in the coop run at four thirty in the morning with a spot light on it, was bigger than my 110 lb. lab.,for sure. I now only have 4 females and one roo. The predator also killed my most spoiled rotten goat. It killed both of my Blue Copper males, Lil Bill and the young male I was growing out from single matings earlier this year. I only have my Black Copper male, two Blue Copper pullets and two Splash Copper pullets. It even took my oldest and best hen, Darryl and her 3 month old pullet. It has been a fiasco. Whatever it is is big enough to rip doors off the side of the coop that are bolted shut, ripped the coop doors right off the coop. Dear husband thinks it may even be a bear, I have my doubts about that, however, upon talking with some of the neighbors we found out that one saw a mountain lion early one morning on the way to work last week in another neighbors pasture (two houses away). Me thinks it is probably the cougar.

Found 2 hens in a tree, took the 32 ft extention ladder to get them down.

Be Well!
im so sorry to hear all this, i hope you get rid of that predator somehow :(.... i have two baby blue roos at 2 months that you can have if you like.. .. hang in there...

Im sorry to say your within your right to protect your livestock and lives. I would shoot it. Contact the athorities first, if they dont do anything, dispatch it. What happens when it upgrades to children. I know we need to try and cohabitate, but you have to draw a line in the sand. Sorry about spelling. Dont feel like checking!

Hey (i started a message then lost to the internet)lol
Thanks for the best wishes ....

WOW a Mountain Lion .... you better keep a rifle handy , do you have dogs (big ones)?(yep, saw you have Lab) Be Very Careful !!!!!!
So sorry for your loss ..... if you need anything just let me know .... i've got some good BC dark eggers (best i've seen) don't think I could ask for more . Just email me if i can help and i did get a few Blue Coppers in some of Bev's blood (will know more about them later) .

I had a Jaguarundi get most of my chickens about 3 years back(all except Marans) i had the Marans in better location (about 75 chickens while i was sick ) . I know how you feel so let me know if i can help .
These cats come up from mexico into Texas and are seen in lower Alabama (where i'm at) .

Tearing things up sounds like a bear but a hungry Mountain Lion could very well do that .

Wishing You the Best (be careful),
Shannon

Here is a youtube video, right or wrong that I found with the copper head and necks. Im not judging whether they are or not right. I guess it boils down to what you like.

So, so sorry, just heartbreaking :( I will be up at the PNPA show in Vancouver, WA 10/19 (Just to observe). Would be happy to bring you some birds that far if you like. I have some very nice pullets, toe punches healed over so I will not be breeding them and I have plenty of others. Also have some promising young cockerals growing out but they would be a 1/2 or full sibling to the pullets. Black Coppers only. Please let me know and in the meantime I will be praying you get the culprit.

Thanks for the positive thoughts everyone! I contacted Fish and Wildlife yesterday. They are going to have someone call me back. Good thing they are state run and not federal......and still open for business. We do have large dogs outside, they only bark from the front porch. Dear hubby is ready to take action if need be with dispatching if necessary. We put up game cameras but the first couple of nights they were not positioned in the right place and we didn't get anything. We repositioned them and now just waiting to see. Nothing has happened the last couple of nights. Now the problem lies with the remaining birds........they will not go back into their coop and by 5pm they are in another tree right outside off our back deck, and it's a game trying to get them out. That makes me crazy. We are being careful and I completely understand the comment about the children. We have 5 neighbor kids that walk our road, but since the parents now know about the predator issue they have been driving the kids to the bus stop and picking them up. This makes me feel better, because out here the kids must be to the bus stop by 6:15am and it is pitch black.

Shannon thank you for the offer and I may just take you up on that in the near future. :) Prior to the predator I had been thinking of getting some more stock to work with.

Zanna~ I would love to meet you at the show, but I am afraid that I cannot get there that weekend.,That weekend that I am going on a trip with the student services council from the college to the University of Washington for a special language class I signed up for. Geesh! I think I got myself into more than I wanted but it will be fun I am sure. I hope you have a great time at the show. And thank you again for such a kind offer. You are the greatest!
