Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

sorry but I don't have any roosters at all. Oh also my girls are very tidy. They actually leave the mulch in my flower beds.

Nothing like having tidy chickens around the place.

They will, eventually, lay. :)
We have one hen that was born last December that we are still waiting for her to lay. What could be the problem? We couldn't cull her, she is so sweet, always comes up to us and lets us pick her up, I think she likes to be held. We call her Midnight because her face and comb has a blackish hue, I think that is a violation to the SOP.

There is nothing wrong with having a pet chicken. Some people need them to be productive in one way or another financially. If holding a sweet hen increases your endorphins and peacefulness, I say that's worth a lot. Cheaper than a therapist! I don't name my chickens nor hold them just because...but I have mini donkeys, a horse, and my dog for that ;-)

Here is a picture of the hen that KsKingBee is talking about. Any opinions on her age or noticeable problems? She is pure black with nice leg feathering. We purchased 2 other hens with her that are supposed to be her sisters. One died a month after we got her, but she was laying nice medium dark eggs, and she had some copper on her neck. The other one is pure black, heavier feathering on her legs and lays a light brown egg. Opinions, please.

The picture is a bit blurry, from what I see, looks like pullet, cockerel, second pic seems to show yellow in the legs which you do not want. Ideally, they would have feathered shanks and outside toe.

ETA: OOPS! Second pic looks like a 'he', lighter color, saddle feathers, sorry!

How old is she? She definitely looks overmelanized. The face, wattles, and comb should be red and I see a lot of black mixed in. Her eye color looks a little dark, too. Look at the comb and see if it is flopping over in the front. Can't really tell from the photo. If it flops (lops over) too much it is a disqualification.
