Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

All right. Sorry but I'm SO excited and just have to share! - my first double yolk. And it came from my tiny FBCM.

I am now confused as to what a pure_ bread black copper marans female looks like. I had read that they should have copper on their head, neck and or chest. But I came across Bev Davis Marans site. She says:
Quote: I was shopping for Blk. Copper Marans before I did all my research. and found someone selling Marans . I told them what I wanted, and they sold me what they called BCM. I bought one male and 2 hens. When I came upon this site I found that my male looks more like a Wheaten, and the females are solid black. My confusion: Might I have BCM females? Does that make their off spring mixed Marans?
(The chicks look like the pictures of the BCM chicks on the MyPet chicken, com site..

....not like the white ones on Bevs site.)
What do you think?

Relax, don't stress. If the person truly sold you Black Coppers you may get females that grow up without copper. Most breeders will agree its difficult to get the hackles (neck) with the right balance. If you get a female that does not display copper she will still be a black copper. The copper genes will just be hidden. I won't get into to much detail as I don't want to cunfuse you or me for that matter lol.

First, the easiest way to determine if you have a wheaten roo is to post a picture of it.
Specifically, we will want to see a nice picture of the wing, plus a body shot :)

BCM females can have varying amounts of copper. Add to that, the copper can be slow showing up on some girls..
Some may not show very much and then produce chicks with plenty of copper..

This girl is a BCM and does not have very much copper.

And here is another girl with more copper.....

what ever it was it must have been the same kinda critter that got my young olive egger lastnight because i found it just like yours with the head and one side of the breast gone. weird
That is very much typical of a hawk attack, not exclusive but likely.

Thank you Math Ace. My Roo is my icon...so take a look. I'll post more photos of him, as I think he is so handsome I have plenty. The off spring of he and the female Marans looks just like your photos. The older ones have the slight copper on their necks. I just don't know what to call them..mixed? or wheaten / black mix? Thank you for your knowledge and for sharing it with me! I do feel better about the possibilities. Too bad you can't do a blood test to see if they are prue breed.

I posted then med. size so that you could study them better. Do you think he is Wheaten?
