Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well Ray,

I didn't have the best luck on getting pics of the cockerels and pullets since they are still worked up since I've been moving them around. Hopefully I'll have more time sometimes in the next few days. Tried to get some shots to see the overall beefy type of the girls. They definitely need work, but I'm getting there.

Thanks so much for taking the time to get the photos and post ! I always enjoy looking at the structure of your stock, I like the smooth curves in their toplines and their deep , broad chests.
Your pullets are beautiful !

Those Birchen cockerals in the background look to have great hackle coloring,,,, I've always liked Birchen, but have seldom seen the silver without the gold overtones.

Thanks again,,,, hope you have luck getting more for us !

No problem, hopefully I can get more. They are pretty worked up about being moved to their temporary pen where I've merged the best from several pens. The next step is finishing going thru the breeding stock pens I already have set up to see where the best from this year's hatch might fit in. I'm going to be keeping much smaller numbers this year, which I'm really excited about! Should make things easier for recordkeeping and time management.

The birchen cockerels are pretty good on color, there is just the faintest gold tinge to two of them, definitely mostly silver, but I'll be breeding them to hens that have good crisp silver and will be very selective about what offspring I keep.

Vicki, here are some pics. of this years work in progress. Can't get good shots for the life of me, everyone is on free-range right now except for the two cockerals (full brothers) and I couldn't even get good shots of them, they were trying to peck me the whole time (not in a mean way, they are really sweet!). Colour never looks accurate on my computer unless I can take pics out in the sun. The colour of the tarps on my coops alter the colour of the pics. Have not picked breeders yet, may not even be any of these, they are just a random sample of a few i have growing out.

Zanna, those are some beautiful birds. Would hope that KansasKingBee and I can have some that awesome someday. Trying to be patient while our first batch is growing. A little confused on why we have the different colors showing up. Here is a pic of the rooster we bought earlier this year.
