Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have found a lot of pictures of black and Splash legbars online but I don't know which are the prefered. Could someone please post an example of a very good black rooster, hen and a splash rooster? I just need a reference. Thanks.

Hmmm...I didn't know that, don't have Legbars. Thanks, DM!

ETA: Deanna, there are tons of pics in this thread of Marans if that's what you're looking for - also, it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the SOP for the breed. Build your type first! Speaking of type, there are some good sketches of the type you should be breeding for in this thread, as well.

Hello, let's talk about cuckoo marans. I don't know much about breed standards, but I think this is my best cuckoo rooster. He is the result of a breeding between a wheaten maran rooster and a cuckoo maran hen. How about grading this guy.

There is a thread for Cuckoos, but this is a general Marans thread too

First off your roo looks Birchen and Cuckoos should not look birchen. It is common in cuckoos that maybe be one reason they were passed over for APA Acceptance. Cuckoo's should be an even barring pattern like Barred Rocks no areas whiter than others. Cuckoo is a faster pattern gene than barring should be. Barreds should be straight across and not v shaped and cuckoo fades to gray then white then gray then black. Barring in BR is an on off gene black and white no gray.

Your roo will have gold leakage you will have to deal with and that is not easy. Second your roo only has a single copy of the barring genes and will not breed true. I personally would not breed him.

I see pictures all of the time but I don't know which are good and which are bad and there are almost 50000 posts on here to go thru. I thought someone might have a picture of some of theirs that have won shows that they were proud of and didn't mind sharing. I am new to breeding and I don't want to breed incorrectly. I found the SOP on the Marans Club website but that is not much information on coloring and not many pictures. I thought the black copper Marans are supposed to have feathered legs but their one picture of a rooster on the SOP page does not.

Quote: There are lots of show winning birds on here.... most still have DQ's so you need to know what to look for. Example at Newnan (A huge show and were the BCM were admitted to the APA) last year I think several of the birds that won had DQ's like white feathers, white earlobes, ..... and the list just goes on and on...... Show winning does not mean they are good birds.....
