Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Will he be good for breeding? He is 14 weeks. Is this too much red at this age? I couldn't get a better picture of him standing. He is a mover.
Hi, Deanna - no, he doens't have too much COPPER - so far, he looks to have the perfect amount. His hsanks could have a bit heavier feathering, but that's easily remedied by putting him with females with heavier shank feathering. It's difficult to tell in these pictures, but in the one of him standing, it appears that his eyes may be too dark; you want them to be the color of a pumpkin - orange (referred to as "bay" in the SOP). I can't tell what his back looks like, or if he has the appropriate angle to it, and we really can't see his underline, either to be able to provide feedback on those things. However, from the second pic, his body appears quite pinched, which is not preferred. It could just be due to him being so young. Do you see how his sides are not parallel? You want the sides to go straight back as far back as possible. Again, this could be due to his age and not being filled out just yet. It also appears that he may be knock-kneed, but again, it's difficult to make a judgment by the pics.

If you can get some clearer pictures - closer up, and with him being more posed, taken from down at his level so we can see his topline and underline better, we can provide more feedback.

Hello Marans lovers! I just took photos of my 4 Marans chicks to show you. I think I have 2 boys and 2 girls, but wanted to get your opinions. Do the females generally feather much faster? Because the 2 I think are pullets are nearly completely feathered, while the 2 roos are not!

When I took these photos, I just noticed that the 2 roos have COPPER coming in around their neck! I NEVER noticed it before these pictures..... anyways.. enjoy! :)

#1 - Female I think

#2 & #1 - both female I think

#3 Roo I think

#3 - see the copper near the neck! I never noticed that before!

#3 & #4 - both roos I think - look at that copper! :)

This is Brite Eyes, my 6.5 month old that lays very large eggs...today's was 72g!!

If I were to breed her to retain her large eggs in her offspring, do I need to breed her to a roo whose mother also had large eggs?

Yeah, I know she is not a show bird, but I LOVES her!

Thanks, I will look for those things. This is very helpful. I have read but don't always understand what is meant. I am learning. Your explainations is great. He is young, I will watch his sides. His feet had a lot more feathers before all of the rain and mud. I will check his eyes and knees. It is hard to get a good picture. If I hold him, I'm too close.

Hi! Here is a picture of my "Blue Copper Marans", Ichabod. Even though I am keeping him strictly for backyard breeding purposes, I don't think he is a BCM. I think all of his colors are off. Can anyone guess what he might be or give me a picture of the real thing?? He is just about 6 months old. He has tugged at my heartstrings since birth. He has been this scrawny thing that kept growing, but wasn't growing his feathers, just fluff. He is very awkward looking but he is very large and keeps a good eye out for his ladies. He also has the most beautiful pumpkin shade, eyes.

Thank you!

Not a copper or Birchen I don't think. He is a cross of something just can't tell you what.

As a brand new person to this sight I would like to see a photo or two letting me know what the bird really looks like. A side view of the head or complete body might help. To me the present photo only looks like some kind of a vultures head. I just don't know what I am looking at. My thinking on respecting the rights and dignity of everyone goes right along with what I see written here and much of what I read in most places makes me think it is very common. I realize that who ever is responsible for publishing can decide to take it down yet with democracy sweeping the world I hope not only warnings were given but somehow there was some discussion by the group of people who are interrested in writing and they as a group decided how to best handle what some saw as a very serious problem. Maybe they would even decide to stop publication but maybe too they would decide of other ways to solve such a problem and that could possibly help every one involved in learning how toestablish rules for themselves in a democratic group trying to accomplish a greater good for all.

Now I see a number of photos that give me a good idea of what the birds look like. I think the photo I first referred to was one from some members and used when they post something.

Hope everyone had a very safe and merry Christmas !

Just a note,,,, I had my first Splash chicks hatch a few days ago,,,, really looking forward to watching them grow out ! That contrast of yellow and silver is quite eye catching, such a pleasant surprise after hatching so many blacks and blues,,,, gotta love 'em !
