Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

How long does it take a cucko to feather out my pullet is 6-7 weeks old and still has down on the head none of my other chicks do can y'all help me out

Cuckoo Males will sometime take longer to feather in. I don't think I have ever seen mine like that at that age. Diet would not have anything to do with it if your others are feathered already. Likely to have a slow feathering gene. I wold probably not breed one with that trait as it will carry forward in chicks. On another note you might get some nicer barring pattern on him. slow feathering is a GOOD thing on Barred Rock. Just keep an eye on it.

The chick is a sexed pullet with no pink or red on the comb at all so I'm 99.99% sure it's a girl I can try the hard boiled egg thing but I already feed a high protein content food and I hope the baring is nice but she is a pet not for breeding at all thanks for the responses

females can have the slow feathering gene too. I didn't mean to imply it could only be a roos.... sorry if that confused you.

I hate the crazy chick stage. I have a box full of month old Wheaten Marans chicks in the mud room and every time I walk by, or get into the box to check their food and water, they stampede and scream in terror.

I know, I hate that about them, wish I had more time to spend around them, but they just act like I'm out to kill them everytime they see me!! Dang, giving me a complex! To them I'm the giant that brings food and fresh water....LOL I guess the fix would be to keep them in the main living area where they can see and hear us all the time, but that would mean cats and dogs always around and I don't trust them!!

Question. I am just learning about Blues. I have been speaking with a gal who breeds Blue to BCM. Can you do that or do you breed blue to blue knowing you will get Blue Black and Spash. Blue to BCM gives some blues but don't they carry the copper gene they can throw ???? Help

Solid BLUES? those are as rare as hens teeth. Usually they carry the copper even if they don't express it. Once the cross is made they are ALL coppers even if they don't express the copper they carry it.

She has a blue.. the Hen is Blue and the Roo is BCM... she shared she gets mostly black BUT can get a blue here and there. ... SO IF I am understanding your correctly .... a blue crossed with a BCM is still a BCM EVEN if its Blue... ?????? Sorry to sound so stupid.

If it is Blue it will be a Blue Copper Marans even if it does not show any copper as the Dad was a Black Copper Marans or a Blue Copper Marans. It is a little confusing but some of it is the abbreviation BCM. Stands for Black Copper Marans.
