There are LOTS of colors of TRUE marans. the color does not make it a marans, the egg color does. Off the top of my head I can think of Black Copper, Blue Copper, Splash copper, Cuckoo, Golden Cuckoo, white, wheaton, black tailed red, Black, Blue, Splash, columbian, birchen, blue birchen...I know that there are more colors, I just cant think of anymore! Check around online, you will see lots of beautiful colors!

These are feather legged, so there must be two separate Marans in Australia too. The Australian Poultry Standards calls for clean legs in the Marans. It appears that adding the title "French" denotes the difference........maybe?

Good point. I don't know what they have. I saw that it said to breed the "golden* males" meaning golden salmon or some other male marans bird with a gold gene (I think) to a female silver cuckoo marans. It says to cull resulting the black females and keep the males and continue breeding them to a "golden*hen" to get golden cuckoos. It does not say to cull the ones with feathered legs etc. If the feathering gene is dominant, seems like a lot of the babies would be feathered... Maybe they breed for clean legs later? No clue -LOL!

They sure CAN...I wouldnt get rid of the bigger combed ones yet though! Let them grow a bit!

Hi, I agree some babies actually hatch with huge combs. Some start getting them very early and large wattles sometimes as well. I have found that they are usually males but I have had two hens fool me so I would keep them for awhile longer. I had one blue marans hen in particular who had huge feet and legs and a large comb. I thought for sure she was a roo but she just turned out to be a big girl and her comb was so large it flopped over when she started laying.

I agree with flowergarden Cull as late as you can stand.. year olds are a good time to cull... You NEVER KNOW about the marans... Plus you won't even know which one to keep much more before 7 months if you have some of the Wade line.... It is just like that... The davis line has better sexing luck due to Bev's great work.

I see some commenting on showing the clean leg English Marans in the future. I am sure they will still be able to be shown just like they always have been showed. If the APA approves the feather leg Marans it should have no effect on the English clean leg Marans.

I have a question about the foot feathering on the BCM's. Is it possible to have too much feathering on them? I have been hatching and have noticed quite a difference in feathering in some of them.

Some have feathering that is very heavy, some medium and some light. Here are a few pictures of them. Is the heavy feathering on this first one too much? It seems almost cochinish.
How about the others? Thanks!
