Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Keep the Cuckoos pure in color. You can breed the black copper and the blue copper together if you want. I don't think the Blues will ever be standardized. Make sure you keep some pure Black Coppers so you have somewhere to go if you get tired of the Blues. If someone is buying Black Copper, great odds are they don't want one from a blue background or breeding. JMHO.
Best,
Karen
Yes, PLEASE keep the blue-bred blacks separate with permanent identification. It's fine to use black coppers in a blue breeding program, but not the black birds that come from blue breeding into a BCM program.

I need some opinions on my one wheaten baby. They're 5 weeks old now and Wynter, the one in the left in the back, I'm very certain is a little cockerel but Flurry, I'm not sure of. She/he's the one on the right. I know these pictures are awful and I'll try to get more tomorrow morning. The one in the front on the left is a silkie/Marans cross and I'm fairly certain that little Fria is a pullet.

Thanks guys. I guess it's still a waiting game then lol. Her/his brother is already a very obvious Cockerel with a bigger, pink comb already. He's even flashing his little hackles and standing up to the grown birds in the flock already lol. 5 week old little monster!

Hello group!
Has anyone ever seen "whiskers" on their marans?
They are growing right along side the normal feathers but not attached to them or part of them.
These are on the upper thigh feathering of 1 one of my Black Copper hens (I have 3 total).

The marans are a small part of my backyard flock that I keep for eggs & their company - not for show or breeding - but I am interested in SOP for them.
Any info would be great. Thanks.

I had never really noticed them on my Marans but when we processed our one roo, he did some on his body. I don't know if that's normal or not though as I'm still fairly new to this.

Hello
I purchased two pullets to add to my flock today. One being a speckled maran :) . I looked her up and down when i got home and she has tiny feathers appearing through the scales on her legs. I know many marans have feathered legs but she is between 16-20 weeks so i thought she would have already produced big feathers if she was going to.

Does anyone think they will grow bigger?
