Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank you PinK for the chance to look at your flock and assess them… You are brave!!!

No, Thank you and Thank you for taking the time to submit your opinions of them! Ohh...No bravery required...they're just chickens.

My DH loves those olive eggs too.......he thinks they are the prettiest eggs I get, even more so than the Marans eggs. My Olive Eggers were made with Bill. I love Bill.....he's my boy!

I think, just yestday, we were talking about how to get GCM's. If I remember correctly, if you take a BCM and mate to a GCM the off spring will be GCM with poor barring. You will have to take the girl offspring and mate them back to the daddy GCM. Then the second generation from the GCM roo will be GCM with good markings.

If I am right - - - GCM experts jump in here and correct me if I messed up - - - all you need is a clean legged BCM hen and an incubator and you are on your way to a whole flock of GCM. . .

I say clean legged BCM because that is what you are wanting. If you wanted feather legged GCM, you could use a feather legged BCM and you would be in business. . . .

In this area you will have a monopoly on GCM, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting rid of your extras.

Your baby roos were soooo cute. Do you have any update pics ? ?

Lisa, I agree about the chicken male being harder to breed to the standards. Out of all the BC chicks I grew out I have only seven left as I culled all that had any kind of fault I could find. I am sure I could have used some of them but do not plan on being around 20 year to work all the faults out one at a time. I think this way will be much quicker.

Anyone that breeds Wheaten Marans do you think they may be a little more fragile that the BC Marans ?

#5 is by far the best one of the females, the Marans are supposed to have a long back, and when it is broad like this pullet is something to be proud about. Great pullet.

Pink, mornin'! Give her more time, that tail will rise! Mine are just now 17+ weeks, and are just starting to grow into their length. Don, thanks for telling me that, you were right...again!

Although the tails aren't at (in my eyes) optimum height, at least they are now not looking like Guineas!
