Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi there everyone! I hope I'm posting in the correct thread here. I got what I guessed to be a female chick from a local breeder - it's a Birchen Marans crossed with a Black Copper Marans. I'm just getting to know this breed, but I tell ya... he sure seems like a male. He's growing at twice the rate of my other chicks, is crazy tall, and is always chest-bumping everyone else. Any guesses? I cannot have roos where I live, so I'd rather re-home him before I get to attached.

Their behavior is not linked to their gender. Ive had plenty of very bossy chicks that were female. If your other chicks didn't come from the same breeder and hatch, then you can't compare them to chicks from another breeder/hatch. Plus, your bird looks like a pullet so far. I would definitely hold out longer

Ok - I will. I just don't know the Marans too well yet, so I thought I'd post. :) Thanks again!
Here's another couple of photos. The Americuana and Barred Rock are about 2-3 weeks older.

Looks like a pullet to me too! They are all cute.

What line of Black Copper Marans do you all recommend? Im starting over with them and want good quality. Ive been looking at Heaven Sent Ranch and Little Peddlers Marans. Any suggestions?

I have Little Peddlers and love them. They are friendly, active birds that lay a great color egg and have great type and color to work with. I ordered a dozen hatching eggs and hatched 5, but it was due to my own ineptness with an incubator at the time.

Maybe someone can chime in on Heaven Sent Ranch birds.

Awesome! I think 5 is a good number of chicks from a dozen of shipped eggs. Would you recommend getting them direct from Brenda Little or go through someone who carries the line. I know Heaven sent ranch has LPs and her own signature line of HSR marans she calls them which is a line she has been working on for like 9 years.

I would personally get them directly from her, but that is only based on my opinion. I can 100% without a doubt know they are true LP birds. That isn't discrediting anyone who carries her line, it just makes the whole process easier for me by not having to triple check and fret or worry. It is more expensive, but in my eyes worth it. Plus, depending on how long ago someone got their stock from her, the birds from someone else and the birds direct from Brenda may be worlds apart. Not only is she actively selecting who to breed every year, but so is the other person. Again this may not matter to you and there is no issue with that whatsoever, but if I'm going to pay for the name of the birds, I'm getting it from the source.

That was my thought too. Now to convince my husband I need a $225 dozen of chicken eggs once my Sportsman comes in.. lol
