Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks for the input Pinkchick! I was able to get some better pics. I read a bit about the tail angle just now in a 4-h pamphlet, it never occurred to me before you mentioned it! It depends on how he's standing; in which posture is the tail angle measured since the angle changes with his stance? The more upright he is the more upright his tail angle is.

Kim, everyone always tells me when I do not have something good to say, just do not say anything.

Will say they had 20 total Marans Feather and clean leg together and a cuckoo was best Marans and was clean legged, so this should explain the quality.

Well that's scary! I thought they were going to judge the two different types (French and English) seperatley?? Isn't lacking shank feathering a DQ in the "French" birds?? Did you get any pics any way, Don?

In my opinion, if the USA is going to go by the French standard, then they should have feathered shanks/toes. If they don't, leave them out of the show ring and do some breeding to get it, or show your clean legged birds in England!

Debbi, you can not enforce the feather leg rule until you have a approved standard that has been accepted by the standards Committee.

I told Tannis, I was not going to post any of the marans pictures as they were not worthy, I believe she might have some though. Don

Don, I don't understand that. How are the participants and the judges for that matter, going to be able to show/judge quality birds if exhibitors can get away with anything and not adhere to any semblence of a proposed standard?? Isn't that what the "proposed" part means?

I think you should post the pics, so folks here can see what NOT to breed for or show. Lots of new folks here to the breed and to showing.

Pick mine apart for that matter; I just posted pics! Seriously, I would absolutely not be offended even if someone were to say it's the worst freaking example of a Marans they've seen. Just so long as you can explain WHY I'd appreciate the opportunity to learn.

I guage their tail sets/angle by the way they carry it the majority of the time naturally while they are just foraging, playing and at ease. For example, when something has them spooked or aggitated or they get excited in any way, naturally their tails go up because they are on alert, which is why I questioned if he normally carries his tail like this because in that photo he looks as though something had caught his full attention.
Maybe Don can give us his advise and tips on how to gauge tail angles by posture. Sorry not much help.

On the coop tag it only had Marans, and nothing else. I believe Walt said after approval the clen leg marans would be DQ if showed in a feather leg class. I have not looked to see if they were entered as feather leg Marans and if the other clean leg were entered as such. They would be judged as you enter them. The French Marans should be entered as Feather leg Marans. Don

I think that's a much more relaxed pic of your roo, and his tail looks fine to me! His comb does rest on the back of his neck, where it should be standing off, but that is a minor fault. I think he is quite nice, as is your pullet. I sure wouldn't turn them over to the coyotes or the stew pot!

They are both nice birds and as Debbi said , I too believe this to be a minor issue and is something that can be worked on. The pullet may be lacking some copper in the hackles but the rest of her is very nice in my opinion. Build the barn first, paint it later.
