Yes, this is the reason for the single mating after all the obious faults are culled. Some say they do not have these faults, the only thing I can say show me the Poultry. The male will show more of these faults than the female. Don

So, are you telling me I shouldn't mix wheatens and black coppers? JUST KIDDING!

Thanks for clarifying. I'll stop beating the dead horse now... But what ELSE are you BC folks culling for routinely?

From everything I have read on Wheaten Marans they are looking for and even shade of medium Wheat color, if the back is too light it is referred to as washout and would be a fault mostly. We will have to wait for the final Proposed standard to really know.

Lets go over the Wheaten like we have the BC, will be back later with a few things I have seen in my Wheaten. If anyone has questions now is the time to post them. Don

6littlechickies: Thanks so much for posting your photos of the show. Looks like a lot of fun. Amazing that those cuckoos with the white tail feathers weren't dq'd but I guess they would have to pick from what shows up. I think the black copper hen is nice looking.

snowbird. Thanks for the info on the female wheaten. I need to hatch out some wheaten chicks so I can get more pullets, gives me something to look for.
I only have one black marans pullet from bbs mating. I would like to find a pure black male. Maybe I will get lucky and hatch one this spring. I think they are pretty. I never see anyone selling pure blacks either..

My understanding is that Black Marans are as rare as hen's teeth I wouldn't mind having some either for my Cuckoos....I should have Silver Birchen for the Silver Cuckoos.....where are any good ones?

Did you ever get those pictures loaded on photobucket? I want to see your Cuckoos....

Is there pictures posted of the winning birds somewhere.. I don't really have time to peruse the net and find them.. Could someone point me in the right direction???

Okay so the blue genetics go something like this:
Blue x blue 50% blue 25% splash 25% blue
Black x Blue 50/50 black and blue
Black x splash 100% blue
Blue x splash 50/50 splash and blue
Splash x splash 100% splash
Black x black 100% black

So...black x blue =50/50 black and blue... This would be the black roo over a blue hen? So will it be the same % black and blue if I use a blue roo x a black hen?

Debbi,
I have asked similar questions regarding banding myself on more than one occassion but got no real response that set out a plan for me. I believe it was Don that sent a toe punch chart & I did save that but am more interested in a method of banding. I have started with banding one leg for year of hatch in a color but haven't worked out the rest. I guess I can assume I will recognize the different breeds so I can use the same color coding on different breeds & not get confused unless I was into cross breeding......which I am not. If you come up with something, please share...Thanks

Very interesting. I went to a chicken Meetup BBQ yesterday & the host who does his own hatching & hatches for others was sharing his hatching thoughts with us. He has 3 Brinsea 20s that he uses & does what he called dry hatches on the Marans.............something about their shell being so strong & sticky birds. He lives more coatal than I so his natural humidity is propably higher than mine. I had to travel a couple of hours to go. He also said that more pullets die in the shell than roos & that is why the ratio, roos to pullets is so high. As I say all the time........so much to learn. I am thinking of buying a new incubator (better yet, Christmas is coming.LOL) so he was trying to share his experiences with me.
