Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I ordered one too for a mating pad...paid 225.00 delivered for it I'm going to put it up higher on concrete blocks and was going to paint it good. I live where the weather is kinda like yours so it's pretty cheap huh I figured but wanted something quick mine should get here Thursday was it quick to put together?

Yup, paid about the same for this. Got here quick with NO instructions or hardware! Just got the hardware on Monday. Took me about 3 hours to put it together, not cause it's hard, cause I'm gimpy.

That included the "beefing up" time too. Cut some T-111 to put over the stupid floor they gave me, and in the nest box. Need to bolt it down to something, because the first 40mph gust of wind that comes along, this thing will be in the next county! Think I'll put some kind of roofing on it too. Plus paint it (already have the paint), and made need something for insulation. Basically, I bought mine to get the chicks out of the house until they are big enough to let loose with the big guys. It will come in handy though for single matings.

Look at the first pic. Those are 5 month old chickens in front, the second pic is 10 week old chicks! Think you could stuff 5-6 LF chickens in there??

Edited to add: I forgot. I put the bolts in backwards, you may want to also, otherwise, you have the nut edges inside with the chooks. I'd rather have it look crappy than have my chooks scraping themselves on the nuts! Besides, it will be easier to take apart if you want to!

You may need that age difference to take care of you in the future! Now, if I could find one twenty years younger, that had carpentry and plumbing skills, and wasn't a PIA to have around, well I'd be in seventh heaven!

Don't know about "got it going on", more like just pluggin' along, but doing it my way, and loving it!

Okay you freaks get a room!!! rotfl !!

I bet I could make some little coops like that ("mating pads" or shaggin shacks-LOL)from pallet wood. We have made a large bachelor pad and a dog house so far from free pallets. I used a colonial maple colored stain on them and they came out pretty nice.

Freaks?? Wish I could find some Free pallets around here! Seems they bring a premium price here. After this summer's fiasco with trying to build the coop, I copped out and bought this cheapy. If not for the quality, it was more for the "easy" factor. So much for easy!

Yeah it probably depends on where you live. Alot of the buisnesses around here list the pallets free on Craigslist just to get rid of them. The last time, we went to this tile place and they had a bunch that had 3/4 sheets of thick plywood on really large pallets. The first few coops we just built from stuff from Home Depot and then dh got the idea to use recycled stuff. Really, I probably couldn't do it all by myself, he is really handy and has good tools LOL!
Just make sure if you do find pallets that they are listed as heat treated ( should be stamped HT on the wood) vs chemically treated. I did lots of research on that and found out some of the chemical stuff is really really bad. I was originally going to buy some cheap large shipping crates that would easily make some smaller coops but then found out they were treated with Methyl Bromide (will be stamped MB on the wood) and discovered it is very toxic to humans and animals.
