Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Poulard you are close to me aren't you... Did you get ahold of any of the local yokels??? There are some good marans in your area...I am certain... I came up there last April.... I have yet to use the hens I bought but I got a new roo I am going to put with them and see what comes out... They were soooo undermelanised with short backs...Not attractive at all... I have a rooster that is all that they are not.. He is BIG and dark... light eyes.. I think it is a real complimentary pairing...cant wait to see the cross... They have no legs to speak of ... He has long ones... I think it will be a winning cross... we shall see.. It was a real crapshoot to pick them up.

Debbi, take a look at the proposed standard and tell me what you think, PM if you would like. Don

Don,

Seems to me that the coloring for the cocks are all over the place?? First it says, dark red, then the head is orange, no dark feathers, then it goes from orange to coppery?? Gray under coat, when all of them I've seen in pics look to have white fluff? I have yet to see one in person, so can't really get a good grip on what they are trying to convey. It just seems all over the map though when it comes to the color of the roos. The hen not so bad. What are your thoughts on it? PM me if more comfortable.

Hi Debbi

The Marans standard has changed a lot since I've been breeding them. Christian from the French Marans Club has told me that it will keep on changing. However, once we have the standard accepted here in America it will remain the same. We will be breeding to the standard and not making the stanard fit the bird.

I guess things are not set in stone with the wheaton... as the BC are not accepted yet??? Is this the one bite at a time theory... Get one done and then work on the next one??? (this is how I do things so it makes sense)

I was just talking about this today. The little ones remind me of two year olds and into everything. They are funny to watch, but they are a lot more work than the older girls !

I have had fun with the swap except they want my turkey eggs and they just don't lay enough right now. I have Dellies and New Hampshires and some beautiful Silver Penciled Rocks except they won't lay until Feb/March...I've gotten large fowl back because that's what I send....it's supposed to be a secret on what you get but so far everyone's told me....you send at least 6

Oh, I'm SO glad he packed you an egg for a pullet! Sheesh (my DH was collecting eggs over the summer for me since he wasn't working...he inadvertently put JERSEY GIANT eggs in the wrong carton and I sent out a few wrong eggs this summer...whoppsie....)
