Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Lisa,

The yellow/green legs may suggest an Ameracauna cross? I wasn't sure in the first posts if they were that color, but in the last posts they definately look greenish. Good eye Don. I may be totally wrong here, but I'd question the green/yellow legs. The slate/pink legs are what I am used to. Just me saying...JMHO

Wait, you're concerned of the DARK feet? I'm sorry, but really, the chick on the right with the weird coloring has the proper leg color. . . The one on the left has green shanks. . . Which signifies either not a purebred or, well, something you don't want.

The brown I'm guessing is from severe mossiness, but only time will tell.

Anyway, with Bev Davis being here, I'd love to ask - Could you tell me of how your Blue Wheaten Marans are doing? Are they to selling status yet? How's the body type? Egg color? I'd love to see photos.

Hi Debbi

If you had read the messages then you would have seen the comments made as the standard was being accepted unless you joined after it was all being discussed.

Bev,

If you are referring to the Yahoo group, well, that may be the problem. I don't go to my Yahoo e-mail account very often. I tried to have the group's messages sent to my default e-mail, but Sue said Yahoo wouldn't allow it?? I could import the Yahoo into my default e-mail but that then clogs up my default with countless Yahoo junk e-mails that I don't need. This may be the problem for others as well? Maybe if decision making issues were brought up on the MCCU site as "special notices", and send folks to the yahoo group where they could leave input, people would actually be able to see them and respond? Just a thought..

Hey Lisa- that yellow green legged chick must be one of mine....if you remember, I told you out of about 20-30 chicks I hatched
this Spring, one had green legs

Not sure where that came from, but it is not something you want to breed....hope it's a pullet
so she can be put in the Layer pen. My original Blue Copper girl had a little copper spot on her head when she was born, it disappeared
quickly and I've seen it on a few chicks...boys and girls. The one you're holding looks like it has some brown in it's down though. I'd
keep an eye on that one for mossiness. I have not seen that in any others, I had a mossy hen from another line though, and she started
with brownish feathering early....again, not something you want to breed.

Don't know what happened to the "quote" but it messed up. Bev, please read the end of this for your reply to the issue.

If you only have an overmelanistic roo.... the only choice, you would use the mossies as they dont contain enough melaniser.. you may well fix the balance...conformation being there and all.

Hi

There was very little mail being posted from the paid member group until recently. You could go to the site, log in and then read the messages.

Wait. Do you mean to say that a person must have computer service to be an active member? Am I reading this correctly?

ETA: I don't mean to be rude. I am just asking because we have just started a Delaware Club and are wondering about this issue as well.

I was told this . . ..

" The males will start getting lots of smut/speckles down their backs and the girls usually don't. By about 4 weeks, the males will start getting pink combs anyway. "

Thank you.........I will put it in my notes.

Hey girl,

I was going to fly under the radar with my posts, but I am sure glad you jumped in here!

I am so sorry I forgot about the green / yellow leg discussion. We have talked so o oo o much that I can only be held accountable for a small amount of it !

The dang chicks won't hold still so that I can get a good look at them. Today was the first time I noticed the yellow legs. I took them outside and in natural lighting (versus red heat lamp glow ) - - BAMMM there it was! Tomorrow, I plan on taking them back out again and looking at them carefully. I'll find out then how many have the yellow feet. The pictures I posted of GROUPS of chicks are yours. The first two pictures have yellow leg bands and they are from your blue copper marans. The second posting is of your black copper marans chicks. So, if you want to know what your babies are looking like - - - you can see them there. I went back and looked at the pictures for yellow feet. I only saw the one chick.

I did go get the one with the brown spot. I think the lighting was playing tricks with my camera because he / she does not seem to have brown fluff / highlights anywhere except that round circle.

Thanks for jumping in here

One of your chicks is super friendly. I have it marked as a pullet and I hope that I am not wrong. . . She comes right up to me, more that the delawares do. She may end up being my favorite
