Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

So my girl's eggs are still spotted, will they always be that way? I don't remember any of the eggs I received (that these hatched from) as being spotty, but that's been a little while ago. Plus, it's hard to say about the roo (their papa), who knows what kind of egg he came from.

She hasn't laid very many, I think we're up to either 6 or 7 eggs so far, but she is laying consistently every other day. I sure wish her 2 sisters would get the hint

Some of mine started out spotted. I occassionally still get a spotted one. Right now they seem to be pretty solid on the color.
So, yours may become less spotted as the paint factory figures out what it is doing

I must say goodbye for a while. I've got little children to get out the door and others to go to the doctors and Christmas Decorations to hang, and coops to build !

Morning Everyone!

Lots and lots of snow and more today. We got 6 inches yesterday and it dropped to 22 degrees overnight, more snow today and down to the teens overnight tonight........b-b-b-BBBBBrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRR!!!!!!! The chickens are wussies and wouldn't come out yesterday AT ALL! No amount of treats were going to get them to come out for a snow photo shoot. Me......I spent all day outside in it......LOVE IT! DH had to drag me into the house around 5pm, he said I had been outside playing long enough. Good thing I will get another chance today. I told ya'll I was outta control and nothing but a big ol' kid. Makin' a "snoulman" today, have a little friendly competition going on with one of my neighbors!

Morning Pink! and everyone else!

We had torandos to the south by the Ill/WI border late yesterday afternoon/evening and today our temps are low 20's but no snow. You know its cold when DH puts a jacket on and not just a sweatshirt to go outside this am!

Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels to all.

Mornin' all!

We had storms here yesterday. Luckily, I got a good window of time to build a larger pen for the chicklets, and they are so pleased! Then came the wind, lightning, and RAIN! Kept praying the coop kit wouldn't blow over or leak on the babies, but as of this morning, they are all fine and dry. 30* lower temps this morning than yesterday, with highs in the 50s. The bottom will drop out on Thanksgiving, only getting into the 30s, and now they are starting to talk "snow". Snow is fine, keep the ice away please!

No egg this morning yet, but will go out again in a bit. I have another one out there with the red and a puffy butt!

Fuglee was a gentleman this morning, although he isn't really impressed when all three of the 11 week old cockerels start crowing! He does a silly little dance and growls, and spins in circles stomping his feet, it's hilarious!

Lisa ~

I have 3 boys in this last clutch, and the major, blood-letting fighting started when they were about 5-6 weeks old. They would grab each other and roll on the ground, and just keep going! Feathers flying, and both drew blood. I removed the biggest from the bunch, and housed the other two with a pullet, in two seperate tubs. They have since developed the pecking order and are now all together again. Now, one of the pullets seems to be a bully! She challenges the cockerels, and really picks on the other pullet.

Since I enlarged the pen yesterday, she has calmed down, so let's hope that's over with!

Ever notice how non-chicken people don't seem to get nearly as excited with your first egg than chicken people do?? Called my best friend to tell her yesterday, of my baby's first egg!

She's like, "ah yeh, that's what chickens do ya know?"
barnie.gif
Had to explain my excitement to her. "I hatched this pullet, now I'm getting eggs from her! It's like your daughter having a baby, sort of!" Then she replies, in a sly sardonic tone, "OH yeh! Your chicken laid an egg!!" That's better, but the sincereity just wasn't quite there..

Debbi I totally understand! I talk chicken and eggs all day and get the "look" from many who think I am off my rocker, it's just because they haven't had the pleasure of being sucked into "chickendom."

You should see the "look" I get when I pull a carton of eggs out of my truck to show them all what I am talking about.........."

You actually carry eggs around with you?" Sure do!!!!!
