Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes, it is a DQ. At least, last I read in the Standard of Perfection. . .

There's a Standard, reading past the Black Copper coloring, here - http://maransofamericaclub.com/Black-Copper.php

And here - http://www.maransusa.org/standards.html

If it doesn't matter to you, then don't worry about it though.

I've let my Black Copper pullet be a broody and she's so happy ...she thought about it before but gave it up on her own was laying everyday then about 10 days ago she thought about it again but never laid any eggs...stayed in the favorite egg box so I thought I'm going to give her a chance. She's all puffed up over those eggs and a very happy camper I gave her Delaware x New Hampshire they'll look like Dels and some Partridge Rocks if she stays nice I'll candle a few @ 8 to 10 days I'd like a good broody hen.

Very nice type on your black bird. Is that white coming through on the tail or is that just the pic? Pullets should start to lay at around 5-6 months sometimes longer. I think they lay sooner when they are with a roo JMO.

edited for spelling

One of my BCM hens went broody around 7 months old. She is now a year old. She has shown no interest in doing it again. She was fine for the broody part, but totally sucked at the mother part. She was a good little mommy for the first week. After that , she wanted to go back to the big girl coop and could of cared less for the chicks.

Good luck with it . . . . I would almost kill for a good broody. I think there is npthing like mother nature will it comes to raising chicks !

o i hate mondays , the silkie i have all are roody broody , they bite and good moms ,,,, let me know ace ,,, il send ya some silkiee eggs , i hate mondays , its 20 s out side

Math Ace...Get a cochin...A 2 year old cochin.. They can't be beat for brooding. A silky isn't tough enought to stand up to marans hens... but a bantam cochin sure is... Poked my cats eyes out cuz he was lookin at her chicks....(I did get him all fixed up) That'll serve him right looking at her babies like that!! I have cochin eggs but it is best to buy an older one... They all suck as a first year... my 3 year old marans are still terrible mothers. They go broody alright and they fight like tomcats over them eggs but yep just like yours they are done after 2 weeks and leave the younguns to fend for themselve... I have gotten some nice younguns but they weren't mama raised...

I have Silkies that I hatched for brooding and I have a couple that are thinking about it but I'd like to see if this girl will do the job and not a big deal if it doesn't work out. I'm doing the New Years hatch I'm going to have quite a few in the brooder anyways...I told my honey who knows if it will work out because we'll need to fix her a pen.....pens I think that is never ending. Right now she's a devoted girl I'll try and get some pictures. Geebs I always think of your fine hen Hannibal is it? I hope she doesn't do that!

Yes... Not quite Hannibel.... But Annebelle the cannibal.. ha ha.. Yep she is a black widow for sure...Naughty little henny... Ha Ha... At least Hannibel Lector didn't eat his children...

Nice black birds. I have one pure black hen from BBS mating. I am going to try to get more blacks this spring by crossing her to some pure blues. I think the blacks are awesome, you hardly ever see any. Thanks for sharing your pics.
