Kim, yes that is A DQ, when the chick grows up the these feathers will close up outside of the other feather. Everyone will tell you to cull, but 30 year ago when I started with Buff Brahma some would come like this and with split wing. After I got them started I would cull them out but we have to work with what we have. Don

Thank you! I thought so but wasn't really sure. I know who the mother and father are so I will watch the next eggs that are in the 'bator for anything, as I know eggzactly whose eggs are in there and none of them are hers, so that would narrow it down to the rooster if it is genetic right? Is it genetic....or is it excessive protein or protein deficency?

There is no requirement for NPIP within the borders of Oregon. Other states have requirements at time of import etc... I have had my flock tested regardless but have not yet subscribed to NPIP. I am not a seller of eggs or birds out of state... I do see the benefits that is why I had my own birds tested for several things... It is just good animal husbandry. I don't believe in circumventing our own firewalls that protect our flocks... The problem I see with it is that you have to agree to buy eggs/birds from only NPIP breeders etc... That narrows the field in what I have available.... It kinda takes the backyard fun out of it..... A certificate of health works here w/o an NPIP certification... which only test for a couple things anyway. I am done with this rant...I think there is actually a thread for it somewhere....

Nice picture pink.. Cute baby.... Well back to X=mas decorating..

The sun is peeking out here!!! that means more eggies from my marans girls.

The poultry experts will give you all kind of reasons it happened. Just swith up the breeding to a little something different wise out of the box. Don

It really seems funny that just as soon as I comment on the NPIP you would say that there was a thread already on the subject and the conversation has been going on all day. Don

Since this is your neck of the woods - - - Do you get any big chicken shows in your area ? ?

About what time of the year do they happen ? ?

Anyway you can find out what the rules are for your state for showing / transporting chickens ? ?
