Sounds like a friend of a friend, of a friend kind of thing. Go back to the source and find out who she bought them from. If you are in the south, it is more than likely they are from a few lines that were already here. If I'm wrong, then forgive me!

I have 3 BCM two week-old chicks in the house. My husband and I have noticed that they make a sound different than any chicks we have had before (and yes, we have raised chicks in the house before)

They make a sound almost like they are purring. It's difficult to describe, but I have honestly never heard chicks make this sound. They make all the regular peeping noises, too.

I was just wondering. Is this a marans thing? Does anybody out there know what I am talking about? I wish I could record it and play it on the internet, but frankly they don't make that noise all the time, and I don't really have a way to record it well, anyway.

********OH! On the news this morning there was a barn that burned to the ground not far from here. It was full of chickens and pigeons. The fire was believed to have been started by a heat lamp.********

Good morning Ivywoods!

Yes, I know exactly the noise you are referring to! I call it a "trill", so far, Pip the lone hatchling, is the only one I have heard it from. Sounds kind of like a child's police whistle?? I thought it was odd too, never heard a chick make that noise before either. I have one little pullet that makes a noise that sounds more like a goose honking rather than a cluck or peep too!

Oh so sad about the barn! Dang those heat lamps, one reason I won't use them!

I talked to a local breeder and he said to wait another year and see how Alfred really does. I can fix the high tail thru selective breeding. Betsy is at the lighter stages of here egg cycle, but her eggs at the beginning were really dark 8-9 only. Cleopatra just started laying and her eggs and are comparable to Betsy's first eggs. Cleo's eggs aren;t as big but I'm sure that'll change in a few weeks. Betsy's eggs are almost round!

Did you get your Marans from a breeder in CA?

No, my chicks came from Tom Culpepper.

Good Morning Everyone!

Ivy~ I read your post in AM thread about the fire, that's very sad. I do not heat my coops because of that very reason. My dad was a firefighter for 35 years and scared the beejeezus out of all of us kids about anything that would ever start a fire. I listened and am now almost obssessive complusive about it. Infact, I will turn around 10 miles from home just to go back and make sure the coffee pot is unplugged. The dryer can't even be on if I leave my house. Call me crazy, but dad did a great job about educating us.

Yes, my adult females talk and cluckle all of the time, even the chicks. I love that about them. They are the only breed that I have that do this. Atleast they aren't as noisey as my Welsummers and their egg song, but they do like to chime in with them when they are singing, especially Bill. He doesn't care which coop he hears singing from, he's on it. He's an enabler.

I'll go you one better..I unplug the dryer when not in use. I have heard of fires starting in them just from some lint and static, even when it's not in use!

Yes ma'am! Tis very true! I had a friend who turned her dryer on as she was leaving her house (dryer was in the garage) she turned it on just before she backed out of her garage, as she was driving away and almost 2 miles from her house she saw fire trucks flying past her. She had a bad feeling so she turned around and went back to her house, to find it in flames. When she turned on the dryer she didn't realize that there was some fabric or clothing underneath it and that is all it took. Very scary. I would unplug my dryer too but getting to the plug is a nightmare so I just leave it off. Now, I'll go one better than that.........I won't even allow rugs, curtains or fabric of any sort to even come close to the central air vents in the house. I freak out even with that. That is what I call obssessed.

DH doesn't know how I can stand to leave the house with the incubators going because of my nuerosies (spelling?).

Because my dear, that's "chicken logic"! An incubator would never dare catch fire, it's has to hatch the eggs, not fry them!!!
