Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm goin to be looking to buy some French black copper marans chicks soon. Could anyone on here direct me to someone? I really have no clue in the difference of the lines but I know you see a ton wade jeane so I would kinda like to get another line. Hope someone can help. I've fallen in love with marans.

Debbi those chicks are so cute!! I would of totally saved the third chick as well. I always help them out if they clearly need it. I don't care what other people say...I love babies !!

Thanks, I needed some reassuring there. This one is now sitting upright rather than laying on it's side. The poor thing had been cramped for so long, I didn't think the neck and legs would straighten out. Looks like they are now, and it's peeping and moving around! Hard to tell now if anything else is/was pipping. Too much bowling was going on in there when the "Rocky" splash chick was in there, and then that one was spreading white downy featherettes around, so maybe some of the pips were actually pieces of feather? Don't know, but will keep watch, and thanks to Pink, will give them till day 27 to do their thing. Eight left to go, let's hope some more hatch. As cold as these eggs were when they arrived from their 1100 mile trip, it's a wonder any hatched at all. Guess the cold is better than the heat, but these felt like they came out of the fridge. The seller did a really good job of packing, so can't blame them at all! Fingers crossed here for some more blues! I'm having a blue Christmas!!

hummm must be the Christmas spirit mine is still in the curled up shape of the egg but walking just can't put his head up I hate to help too....but chirping up a storm before I let it out just stuck from the no humidity.....it might make it so I'm giving it a chance. On another note I candled eggs under my new broody she had been leaving the other eggs alone that were laid but I thought she had too many so I picked them up and left her with hers she has 10 all developing so we'll see how she does since my Marans hen was a bust maybe the Partridge Rock will make it 8 days so far. She was even nice when I checked the eggs since I took 1/2 at a time...I would move her but that's when the other hen quit....I did buy the Partridge Rocks to set my eggs but then I bought silkies and I'm not letting them set yet a couple of those want to be mommies I need to build my broody pens...hard when it's raining

Lotsa,

I sure hope you are not getting the flooding that I've been seeing on TV! Seems to be in So. CA, but when it rains it pours out there! The weather there is lovely most of the year, but paradise does suffer along with the rest of us. Earthquakes, mudslides, floods, fires, Santa Ana winds; been there, done it all! Now all I have to deal with is tornados, lots of lightning strikes, cold, humidity and heat.

And yes, when they get to the point where they are still going strong, but the odds are against them, I will intervene. This one is getting better by the hour! It was not from lack of humidity or heat, it was just too darn big for the shell! That's not it's fault, and the will to live will be a survival plus in my book. By all means, this chick should've been dead by now...but it's not!

Driving into the yard is exciting as the UPS truck got stuck behind us and had to have a back hoe come and get him out.......only supposed to get an inch from this storm but it is real windy so now the trees will fall over...yep paradise isn't always wonderful just glad I have a 1 ton 4 wheel drive I can get stuck real good all the up to the running boards..been there done that it's the digging out part that's the worst

Had that problem with a UPS guy getting stuck in my driveway a couple of years ago. Good thing he was cute!

He's a sweetie, but he does make the rounds...as in more than parcels. Guess if I had to have someone stuck here, he wouldn't be too bad of a guest!

But now, I'm too tired to worry about more than my chooks and dogs, so buddy, you're on your own!

I helped my last two ROOS out of the eggs too. I figured if they were still surviving and tough after a 8 - 10 power loss, they deserved a little intervention. It took them a few days to catch up to everyone else, but they are just fine now!

FUNNY, they were both from my marans hen that lays super large eggs - - JUMBOs.
I want to try to hatch some more from her and see if the next batch has trouble hatching too.

Lisa ~ I've had at least one jumbo egg in each hatch so far, and none of them have hatched. Got one in this batch too, will wait to see what happens with it, it was rocking a day or so ago.
