Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi Debbi - I talked to my son in Iraq this morning also. We use Yahoo IM and can type (IM), talk (audio call) or video call all for free. If you don't have one of those inexpensive web cams you can get one for less than $50 and then see and talk to your son through Yahoo for free. It's the best. I have Yahoo set to ring a distinctive sound whenever my son logs on so I always know when he's online. It made my Christmas morning to see him and know that he is well. He will be home for good in March. Till then Yahoo helps me to "hang on".

Merry Christmas to Everyone. I hope your day is blessed.

BerkSprings- I've been in touch with a German Marans breeder who says their Black Copper hens lay lighter in their second year but return back to the dark color in their third year.
They breed BCM, Wheaten, and White (with really dark eggs for Whites) and say it's just the BC that seem to show that trend.

edited to add: The breeder is German, their is no German version of Marans chickens.

NOW, I have a SERIOUS question - - - -

I remember reading that side sprigs on the marans combs are BAD, very BAD.

QUESTION:

Is this another one of those wheaten indicators ? ?

Is this a dominant / recessive trait ? ? ?

In other words . . . Why does a side sprig on a comb occur ? ?

Math Ace... It is a fault in every breed... It just occurs... It can signify penedesenca heritage but that doesn't mean it IS FOR A FACT pene.. there are other "markers" Wheaton hides... crown comb(side sprigs) is not a marker for wheaton.

Soooooo,

I just hatched 4 roos and I was inspecting their combs REALLY REALLY close today. One of my roos has side sprigs at the very back of his comb. So, he is going to be culled (

it was my really nice dark BLUE roo too!

). NOW WHAT ? ?

The other three roos don't show signs of side springs. . . . NONE of the parents displayed side springs.
Will I MAYBE be able to use the other young roos?

GEEBS, what are the other things I should be watching for ? ?

Merry Christmas Ruth!

My Son has Skype, so he can call for free via computer. We have done the yahoo IM thing, and I can see/hear him, he just can't me. I'm on dial-up so downloading such things is pretty much a waste, too darn slow. I have a mic here somewhere, need to find so I don't have to type so furiously while he's talking!

God bless and watch over them all over there. It's not done until they are home with us.

You just cull the ones that show it as far as I know..it's so tempting to use a rooster with the fault that's probably how you ended up with it.....all the breeders I've ever asked said cull..cull cull cull remember when you're feeling like you can never get a good start that 1 out of 10 is a good one

Here are my two babes so far. Blue Butt and Rocky. Call me weak, but I saved the third one who had been in 1/4 zip pattern for two days! I could stand it no longer, and if there was a time to have a heart and intervene, I figured Christmas was the day. It was so big it had no room to zip! It was even past the point of shrink wrapped, it was DRY yet still fighting and peeping loudly. Call me weak, but I'll take my chances here. It's a blue, still very weak but getting stronger. It was in a very bad position in the shell, head bent backwards towards it's butt. When I pulled the first piece of shell, this gianormous foot popped out!

After picking softly here and there, it was obvious this chick had absorbed the yolk, was almost feather dry, and there was no way it was getting out on it's own. I know, I know, but man, it is Christmas! It's in the LG warming up, and is still peeping strong and trying to find it's feet. It doesn't look deformed like Fuglee did, so please keep your fingers crossed for "Xmas". Here are the two in the brooder. May be a while till Xmas is up to a photo shoot!
