Thank you very much for the information, extremely helpful knowledge to know. I think this group will be here for awhile then as it is a group that had both cuckoo and gold cuckoo in it. I believe the rooster was gold and a hen or two and the rest were regular cuckoo hens. This is the group that I have two "wild types" in along with the two that are solid black. I have both clean and feathered legged as well. So much to absorb...

Well, I'm totally disgusted. 3 chicks out of 11. One good blue, one crippled splash, one bent blue. Don't know what happened to the splash, it's not using one leg. The chick I helped out has a crooked neck that seems a bit better, but it's not eating yet. Blue Butt is fine, and meaner than bat scat! Today is day 26 in the bator with NO signs of life. Will leave them in till tomorrow before I pull the plug. I really stink at this evidently!!!

It's 9* here this morning, and hard to keep the house warm. I think I'll wait for spring before trying to hatch any more, I am just so darn frustrated this morning.

On the plus side, I did get 9 eggs last week, and the color is getting darker!!!

Hey hey hey....don't be so hard on yourself. Remember they were shipped eggs! Not saying shipped eggs are bad but we all know what its like to have less than desired hatch rates from shipped eggs...it's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes my friend. I shipped in eggs from Conneticut 2 times...18 eggs the first round and almost 2.5 dozen the second round....1 chick hatched from the first eggs, of course it was a roo, 3 chicks hatched out of the second batch of eggs 2 roos and 1 pullet, one of the roos didn't last 3 days.

to you my friend, I am sorry for the frustration it brings.
As for the leg and neck issues......PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!

The leg issue may be something that you can help correct and put the bird in the layer flock if it ends up being a girl.

Thanks Pink. Yes, I know all about shipped eggs and all, but more of them were rocking a few days ago, and now nothing. Breaks my heart. These did have a long trip, and in cold weather. I'll try to get some pics of them today. I'd almost bet the farm that Blue Butt is a cockerel too

Betcha that chick in the front ends up closely resembling a Golden Salmon.

Do you have another photo of the chick on the right in the last photo all by itself?

Dh says that the ones that are born first and scream the loudest are usually boys...so far he has been right on our hatches LOL!

Debbi maybe all you got was 3 but all you need is one boy and one girl to start your blues

I know it breaks your heart, I can't stand when that happens, I always feel like I should have saved them but then I remind myself that maybe it wasn't meant to be for these little ones....to help ease that feeling I put more in the 'bator and try again.

I am thinking the one on the right is either a really light golden cuckoo male or a wheaten male perhaps mixed with GC (no leg feathers etc) but need more pics...

I don't know how well I can portray in pics what's going on with them. The splash's left leg is drawn up more, and she limps around on it. Looks to me it may be in the hip area, dislocated?? If I hold her over my hand she will put weight on it to some extent. The other blue that I helped was in such a bad position for so long, it's neck is curved to one side. It seems to be straightening out a bit, but it won't eat yet, neither has the splash that I've seen anyway. I've made sure they both got some vitamin/electro water in them, may try some yogurt today.

Debbi~
Have you given the bent neck chick some vitamins?

haha we must have posted at the same time!

They have a tendon that runs along the back of the leg that is suppose run down the leg and behind the knee. Sometimes this tendon can roll off track and cause the chick not to be able to use the leg. This tendon can be gently rolled back into place using your thumb. Let me see if I can find that info for you. I believe this is just something that happens and is not hereditary or caused during incubation.
