Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks village chicken that is a good easy to understand explaination. So my "light GC" could be carrying wheaten, columbian, and cuckoo genes? I think I would like to 'play' with him and see if I could draw out the columbian if it is indeed present....what should I breed him to?

Just for learning purposes I will post his baby pic (before feathering in) He is on the left, he did have the light chipmunky pattern on his back and a spot on his head. This 'chipmunk pattern' was very light much lighter than in the pic. There is a wheaten chick on the right (for comparison).

Hi Geebs,
What color birds did you use when the Golden Salmon popped up?
Thanks,

These are some really good pictures ! NICE JOB taking them . . . . .

The chick in this second set of pics isn't a Golden Salmon. The head stripe is too wide
plus the stripe is blurred around the edges. Probably eb (brown). They can manifest an
indistinct dorsal stripe. However, across the top of the skull it is more of a brown helmet
than a dorsal stripe.

Can you tell me??

It is from my cuckoo/gold cuckoo hatch. I think I even may have two BCM's in the mix.

I have seen a chick like the lighter one before. I believe it is a golden salmon/wheaten cross. This would make sense if your
Golden Cuckoos are based on perhaps eWh/e+ .

Well, things are starting to look better for the bent blue chick. Earlier today, I snuck out into their room to see them before they see me. It was drinking, then walked over to the feeder and ate!!!

It's looking stronger by the hour, and seems to be straightening out in the neck. The splash, well no difference. I gave the two weak ones a bit of their medicated crumbles, mashed up with some lightly warmed plain yogurt. Both ate some willingly, so figured it can't hurt. NO Poly-Visol or cranberry oil in town, dang little towns sometimes! Wal-Mart is a 60 mile trip, and even then, they may not have it here, but they should have baby vitamins. So all is not lost yet, but I still think the splash has a dislocated femur and will have to be put down. Sure not looking forward to that

As for Blue Butt, OMG! That little 2 day old chick reared back and attacked my finger!

Then stood there glaring at me like Pip did the other day! It is also scratching like a hen. Mean pullet, or fiesty roo?? I'd almost bet the farm Butt is a roo and going to live up to his name!

Some of my best hens have acted like that as infants....

Cool geebs!! I thought it was odd that it was scratching around in the shavings. I have yet to see a cockerel do that so young, and some of mine don't do it at all!

Got another egg today!
