I would add the light in the morning. If you add it in the evening it will mess them up roosting. IMO

Morning!

I run lights in select coops from 6am until 9pm, I have never had a roosting problem. What do you mean by this Jim, what specifically do they do? Do they just not want to roost?

I tried running lights in the evening, went out to check on them after the light went out and they were all on the ground. They didn't know to roost because the light went out all of a sudden. This was just my experience. I have my lights coming in the morning and let them go to bed when it gets dark.

Oh boy.........my husband is going to love it when I tell him I now need electricity into all my pens..............LOL Oh wait, maybe I can get my son-in-law to do it. He's an electrician & always willing to help me too....I am blessed.

I am looking to just add in a few colorful hens to my flock. I have hens only so no breeding here, not till we move that is. Not knowing that I would really enjoy chickens so much I just bought what my Uncle's feed store had without being picky this summer. So I have 5 silver cuckoos which are kinda dull in color. They are so far the better layers & better temperments then the 4 wyandotte. The breed is growing on me seeing all the pretty colors out there on this list. I would like to get 1 wheaten & 1 golden cuckoo pullet or hen. Any one know where I might come across someone with these in the Pacific Northwest? Perfer the Pierce County area, less driving.

Sewandgrow-I LOVE your LOVE shack! Fruit bins? Do you have any idea where a person could get some? I'm in the process of planning for 5 breeder pens, and I like building with recycled materials. My whole coop is a recycled antique horsedrawn blacksmith wagon, and my runs are recycled from someones dog kennels.

My runs are going to be about 4' x 10' and perhaps one 10' x 10'. The house will take up a considerable portion of the run, so I definitely want to put the "love shack" on legs.

As I said, I enjoy making stuff like this out of recycled material, and I think I do pretty good for an old lady, but I am definitely not a carpenter, so starting with something like those fruit bins sure looks appealing.

Not really. Interesting story, though. We got some boer goats and couldn't sleep at night worrying about all the coyotes getting the little goats. I contacted my sister who also raises goats and she found a guy that wanted to get rid of his GP. We contacted him, and he said if you take one, you have to take them all....male, female and 3 pups. We decided to take them, even though we didn't want that many. We were afraid he might "put them all down." But when my husband went to get them they could not catch the female. We ended up with our male, Buddy, and the 3 pups. We decided to keep one of the pups. One of the other pups went to be a LGD on another farm, and we discovered one was deaf. We advertised her on Craigslist, pointing out that we were afraid to make an LGD of her due to her deafness. We got a call from a lady who said, "HOLD THAT DOG!" She came right up to get her. She was obviously very experienced with dogs and knew what she was doing. Our little deaf GP went into training and is now a human rescue dog! She has had several finds of lost children and has been specifically trained for water rescues. She has even been to Haiti after the earthquake to do cadaver recoveries. We were so happy and proud that our little deaf pup has such a noble career.

Sophie, the pup we kept is the dog in my picture. We raised one litter of pups from her and then had her neutered. All her pups went to be LGD's with the exception of the one we kept.... Runt. You can guess from his name we was the runt of the litter, but he is about 5 months old now and learning his job as an LGD and is my husbands companion dog. My son literally brought this pup back to life when he found it not breathing after Sophie had laid on it. Talk about some bonding there.....

To relate this all to our chicken forum, Sophie, the dog pictured has actually rescued one of my BCM roosters from another dog. She chased the dog off, then kept the roo between her front legs, licking it until my husband and I got there. I guess you can tell I love these dogs!

I do go to chicken swaps. I do business with the BYC members that I have met on here. When I am looking for something specific, I post on the swap's thread that I am looking for these things. Then I make arrangements ahead of time to meet that person at the swap with the item - - whether it is hatching eggs, chicks, or full grown chickens.
