I run lights in select coops from 6am until 9pm, I have never had a roosting problem. What do you mean by this Jim, what specifically do they do? Do they just not want to roost?
I tried running lights in the evening, went out to check on them after the light went out and they were all on the ground. They didn't know to roost because the light went out all of a sudden. This was just my experience. I have my lights coming in the morning and let them go to bed when it gets dark.
