Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

To HISchickens....I really don't think that either of those Roostrs will work for you. I think you should send them MY way and look for others...

they'reHISchickens :

DH finally got to take some pics of the roo we kept out of last year's hatch. These came from eggs from cottagegarden and AHappyChick. Sorry we don't know whose is whose.
Here is Blue. He will have three girlfriends: Blueberry: a nice blue with lacing and a nice copper halo and dark eggs, and two blacks: Copper has some copper colored hackles and a very dark egg, and Mahogany has very few dark mahogany hackles and a speckled egg.

The girls haven't bothered to come out in the snow for pics.
What do you think... will he do or do we look for another boy?

The standard for the blue coppers hasn't been officially submitted by the standard committee. I don't know how that "lemon" thing got in there, that was before my time....

The only standard that the club has voted on is the black copper, so all the rest, even though they appear as proposed, have not really been looked at "officially"

The next variety is Wheaten, then White, probably cuckoo and then blue copper. Both Wheaten & White varieties have already gone through the preliminary showing, they just need the final "big 50" show for acceptance.

There is a lot of discussion before the vote. It is very democratic and everyones input is heard as the membership group is not moderated.

Sue

Sue, who knows about the lemon thing, we're human, it's all good. I just thought that it would be neat to post all the proposed color drafts for discussion and may recruit some new folks to join up with the MCC at the same time. Thanks for all you do for the club Ms. SUE!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the commentary. . . I appreciate it!

Today, we are suppose to warm up 7 degrees more than yesterday - - yea! We might actually get into the 50's today.

If so, I have roo # 3 to get some pictures of and get your opinions . . .

Lisa,
I only refrain from comment because I don't have the knowledge you need............Sometimes I feel like I never will. All my cockerels fall short when compared with their father. I look at them & wonder how they even came from him. Their combs look like saw blades & their colors scattered. I wish I had taken juvenile pictures of their father. I don't EVER remember him looking so bad. I will probably end up using him to breed back any pullets I have that turn out decent & even with them it looks like it is slim pickin'. Most of my new girls will go to the layer pen. I will end up with an egg farm........LOL.Gosh, I hope they at least lay well. Their mothers didn't so probably NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a few Marans questions:

Can the Cuckoo variety lay as dark an egg as the Black Copper?
Is anyone breeding specifically to the English standard without the feathering on the legs?
Anyone have Sand Hill's Cuckoo Marans? (He has both feather legged and non-feathered in together.)
How many eggs a week do you get with a Marans hen?
Do they go terribly broody after the first year?

Thanks!

This is what makes this thread SPECIAL . . . we are all in this frustrating boat. Nothing is going right, yet we keep paddling along.
It is an upstream trip!

I have seen a LOT of negative posts lately about this thread - - -But by God there are an awfully lot of Good, Supportive and knowledgable people on this thread.

I don't see the critiquing of birds going on in some of the other thread. It is GREAT, IMHO, that we are able to IDENTIFY our birds faults. It is even better when we can suggest how to fix them or if it is FREEZER CAMP time . . .

The marans thread is 975 pages of KNOWLEDGE and SUPPORT ( otherwise known as "chit chat").

I , sincerely, hope the regulars on this thread do not allow the nay sayers to get you down. We have enough frustration on our hands just trying to produce good marans stock. . .

Thanks Sew and grow for posting . . . I appreciate knowing I am not alone . . .

Sewandgrow - don't give up on those boys...sometimes they take forever to get through the "uglies" - sorry, I'm way behind & didn't see pics of them yet - but, if they are are less than 8 or 9 months, they still have lots of maturing to do.

Chickhick - most definitley cuckoos can lay as dark as black coppers. But, I would say mostly likely not those from a hatchery. You need to go to a breeder that has experience breeding them in order to get the darkest colored eggs. I believe the Kelly Cratty line in Cuckoos is known to be a very dark laying line - what say you, Cuckoo folks?
