Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a lovely blue maran pullet that I picked up, that had too much red spill for the breeder to use in her program. She has a few red feathers on the underside of her neck that are a very bright red colour. Not copper like my BCM, but more pinky red. What colour would she be considered? I would assume not a Blue Copper because those red feathers aren't at all copper?

You can see the different colour of red as opposed to the copper pullet.

If she has copper in her hackles at all, she is considered to be Blue Copper. Many times, Blues with Blue Copper hidden in their genetics will pop up to visit once in a while.

I agree with Ernie that this pullet is a Blue Copper. Alot of "Blue" ("blue" with no copper) Marans have copper in them. Some lines of Blue, Black and Splash Marans were made from Black and Blue Coppers that are or were very melanised birds....the melanisers can cover the copper/red and make a bird appear one solid color. Often the evidence of the copper/red genetics shows its self via leakage. Solid Blue, Black and Splash Marans not carrying copper/red genetics are very rare and in my opinion,.even harder for a person to get their hands on. The "red" tells me the bird also carries Mahogany....Mahogany will contribute to a much more red color vs. the copper. Also...it's always Marans with an "s" if you have one Marans or 20 Marans. :)

Thank you Don! :)

Thank you Flgarden! I think he is going to be a nice sized bird. For the longest time I thought he was going to be extremely narrow, but he is really changing now with some bulk.
I don't blame you for not wanting to work with the mahogany.

Vicki~ I hope you don't have any problems with the owls. :fl Little Birchen pullet is doing great btw! Spunky as ever and feeling fine. :)

great to hear your birchen girl is doing really well. I figured she would be fine considering how she was when you found her.
Those owls are gorgeous, but with as big as they are, they could do some serious damage, so they better stay away. I don't want any birds to go missing. Gonna have to make sure I shut up the birds a bit earlier at night to keep them safe, since that's when they come out to hunt.

For sure those Owls would give me the worries. I bet they are gorgeous....we have some really cool looking Owls around here and I love to hear them hooting, but I don't like seeing them in the trees around the coops.

Got a call from the Seattle area yesterday from Coastal Farm and Feed asking if I have any chicks available...............and of course I don't. :he

indeed. I tried getting a couple of photos, but they are pretty people shy, which is great. It also was pretty low light, so they shots I did get were from really far away and blurry. I'll keep trying tho. There was also an absolutely giant red tail a couple of weeks back right by the two runs to the south that aren't covered yet. I can't wait til spring when I can rework the rest of the pens and not not have to worry so much.

Thank you :) Yes, the colour of red is nothing like copper (compared to my BCM), it's definitely more of a mahogany!
