BCM is the abbreviation for Black Copper Marans. I am honestly not sure if there is an abbreviation for Blue Copper Marans, maybe someone who raises them will chime in................ I like all the colour varieties of Marans but settled on the Black Copper Marans as they seemed to be more available and I loved the black/copper contrast. I had also heard at the time (5 years ago) that they laid the darkest eggs in general. I know that now some of the Blue Coppers and other colour varieties are laying winning dark eggs due to the dedicated and hard work of the breeders. If you just want to stick to one variety, choose the colour that you like the most!Hello! I have been reading through a lot of this thread, and I have a question. How do I know if you are talking about a blue or black copper marans? Everyone seems to use BCM. I am a newbie, and will be picking up 2 marans on Friday. I am trying to decide between blue copper, black copper and white marans. Any advice?
Congratulations. A lovely hen for sure. This cock has a problem with duck foot. Note how the rear 'fourth' toe is not in the rear as it should be. It is genetic.
So glad I am not the only one who dares to try to share information.I wrote the seller and enlightened him/her about the boys coloring. Hope they listen.

I wanted to say two things here:Marys trio of Black coppers and her blue and blue splash Marans chicks.
#1 Big Daddy Elvis
His girls "Davis line" who are now laying and the eggs are not quite the chocolatte brown high end of the egg scale but they blow Marys brown egg layers away!!
Now for the chicks who have me confused, they were all got at 1 day old and were all exactly the same size but now some have dwarfed the others and are 3X the size of the little ones??
It looks to me like Elvis has a side sprig. Not something you'd want to breed forward. Since I've been following the Marans thread, I've also become comb-conscious. I don't like the huge beefy combs on Marans. I think the blue copper I have has one of the prettiest combs I've ever seen. I wish all mine had one like his.Marys trio of Black coppers and her blue and blue splash Marans chicks.

The splash Marans chicks,
#1 the little one.
#2 the one with the most blue and the largest of the three.
#3 the one with the biggest comb and almost the same size as the largest one.
The blues who are bigger than the little splash but not as big as the larger splashes,
#1 a little bigger than the little splash.
#2 almost as big as the larger splashes.
Not sure what to make of them or how to tell the sexes but we are hoping to get a good trio out of the bunch.
Also how would you recommend we set them up? should we do splash to splash blue to blue or should we mix them up?
I know they all came from splash to splash parents.
Thanks Mary and Scott Ras.
Edit:
The top right two were the eggs we got from one of our girls before we introduced Elvis to the girls,
The girls were with the laying hens at this time and we are sure that it was one of the girls that layed them!!
This is about the average morning haul! some mornings more some less.

I was waiting for someone to see the comb, It is good education when someone else finds the faults. You beat me to it , Don![]()
We hope to have some better quality with the blues and splashes but no one can tell until they mature how close to standard they will be.I wanted to say two things here:
I like the cockerel but know others will find fault as they always do and is easy to do.
secondly if you look in the background of both these pictures you will see a pullet/hen with a white ear. This is what happened here with stock. My cockerel looks a lot like this though I think this ones chest is a bit more upright than mine. Is that pullet's comb laying over or just twisted?
i recognized the face without you even having to post a picture! We have some, too!
