Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am sure he will do just fine with them. We have had several conversations and this will be his hobby as he is not in them for making money. Just loves the Birchens and would like a project so they fit his needs perfectly.

I start my seeds on trays in the house where it is warm and use moist paper towels to crack them. Once they have cracked they go in to starter trays or appropriate containers depending on size of plant and how much room it will need to start before transplanting to garden. Then they are moved out to the shop under grow lights. I told you this is my hubbies most favorite time of year because he loses a huge portion of useable space in the shop because of my lights and tables. We also have a woodstove out there for keeping the heatsource going if it gets a bit chilly. Once I have good establishment, I move the seedlings to the greenhouse to harden off. Then to the ground.

I have a neighbor that I am going to talk to about beekeeping. I have always been interested in it. My family and friends think I am crazy because bees, wasps, yellow jackets and the whole stinging family of insects do not bother me. I like to let them do their business in the garden and flower beds and I don't freak out when they buzz around me. I love watching honey bees, they are my favorites. I also love to photograph honey bees!
sounds like you are doing things right. There are some seeds that want to be planted into the soil and not disturbed and want to be left to take care of themselves. Perhaps that is part of the reason you don't have luck with those ones you say you can't get to come up.

The birds will be happy this year because I'm going to be growing a ton of stuff for them. Been reading up on Victory Gardens and came across advertisements in papers about Victory gardens for your flocks in major newspapers. So, that's precisely what I'm doing to do. Will be fun to see what they like and don't like. Now to just figure out how to keep them from getting the latch open on the gate to the garden. Yes, Gigantor and Big Boy both figured out the latch last year. So, looks like there are going to need to be some extra sort of closure that can't be undone by them.

I don't mind bees and bumble bees, but hate all other things like wasps and etc. I think because bees have a purpose, I'm fine with them. I love watching the bumble bees here, they are massive and its even funnier when the birds decide they are going to chase the bee, and then realize its time to run when the bee changes its mind and starts chasing the birds. The hens will start sqwaking and half running and half flying away. Makes me laugh everytime.

Regarding wasp / insect control: Have you considered a few Guinea fowl for insect control? I keep a few around and they are wonderful at controlling wasps, etc. The benefit is worth the noise and drama to me.

Wasps are great for pest control on the gardens! Just wish I had something that could keep up with the darn stink/squash bugs! Luckily I managed to harvest quite a bit before they killed off the rest! So frustrating! Not too bad though for using absolutely nothing in the way of insecticide/home remedy..anything on the gardens! Not to mention our drought! All lasagna gardening. My grandmother gardening for years for generations just shook her head at my gardens .... between there being "no dirt" and square foot gardening method...she really doubted I would grow anything! LOL! I love my grandmother but it was nice to show her the end result and gloat about it! 40qts of green beans...more tomatoes than I could do alone!!...ditto for the squash & zukes! The only thing I could not get to grow or live for that matter were cukes!! I haven't a clue why! Wilt maybe??!? OK...sorry...but don't chickens and gardens go hand in hand! Ha! I'll stop.

Hi Becca! Welcome!

I do not know this person, but I have been watching his ads on CL. The eggs and their color look nice and the couple of photos that have been posted for his Black Copper hens seem to be nice. They have beautiful copper hackles that is for sure. Last time I saw his ad he was asking $25 per pullet/hen, correct? $25 is reasonable IMO.

Hi Pink!
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, his 6 week + pullets are fairly priced at $21. I am excited to have 2 BCMs and 3 olive eggers arriving from him at the end of April. If I ever make the leap to breeding, though, I have you in my sights as my local "go to" gal!

Can you sell marans just based on egg color? Like, for example, if someone wanted to buy maran hens that laid dark eggs and you warned them that the hens/roos weren't breed SOP, would that be ok?

Depends all on what your buyers intentions are to do with the birds. If they are not going to show the birds or sell hatching eggs then it wouldn't really matter. If they are planning to show or sell hatching eggs to others who might want to show those, then they might want to re-think it. Many breeders who have Marans do have birds that are not "show quailty" birds but they could still lay very nice dark eggs. I would be honest and tell them that they lay nice dark eggs but are not show quailty birds. A lot of people will ask, "what line are your marans from?" Or do you have pics of your stock? Most breeders can tell by photos of your stock if they are SOP or not. Some people care, while others don't.

Sad news today...... My Blue Copper Roo Died

he was yous Pink

I don't know for sure but I think it was his heart. His comb had curled sideways and turned purple and had been for a couple of weeks I think. I removed him from the breeding pen and he seemed to be eating and drinking fine. I wormed him and gave him some antibiotics. He didn't seem any worse yesterday. Still alert and active and eating.

I do have that younger Blue Roo that looks so much like him. I also have another younger Blue roo that I will hold onto to see how he turns out after a molt. Both look like their dad.

I am also keep all the little roos I hatched from the other blue copper roo that died. I have culled a couple from my last hatch from him.

Good news is NOW is the time to use Erik. Erik Vicki helped me pick. I have been using him in other projects because I didn't want to breed him to his sisters. This pen is full of his nieces so I feel better using him. When I see him in the pen he is SOOOO much bigger than the other 2 blue roos. He is going to give me some good size to next years crop.

Wish me luck.... I am going to thin his pen down, I don't want to kill him by having him cover too many girls.

This is Erik, he has a much better tail and is much bigger now.
