Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I am new to the whole chicken thing and due to chicken math got some wheaten marans chicks for a broody hen I couldnt break. I'm pretty sure I have one roo and one pullet but some things dont seem to match with the roo. I dont know anything about the clay coloring either. Supposedly they are purebred of decent lines (parents are from green fire I believe). First two is of the roo in question, He? was smaller and lighter feathered when I got them at about a week old, the second is of his? sister, potentially a few days older. If the age I was told is right they are in the 4-4.5 week old age. Would love to know what you think!
First one is a cockerel and the second one is a pullet. :)

My dog did some damage to one of my 8-week chickens. There doesn't seem to be a lot of damage. Feathers are ripped out on his/her back with a puncture wound on the back. It only seems like a tear in the skin--the poor chicken's pelvis stopping the tooth. The chick has some bruising around the eye, but no swelling. One wing was drooping. When I found it, the poor thing was pretty shocky. I emailed a friend who is an avian vet in the Middle East (and who is very fond of chickens). He said that shock was the biggest problem and not to feed it because the digestive system often shuts down when in shock. It happened last night. I put it in a box separate from the rest. This morning it seems a lot better, but still not right. I'm going to try to give it some electrolytes by hand with a dropper. The wing is carried almost normally, and my even be normal and just the missing feathers creating an optical illusion of it drooping. I have it in a crate in my kitchen and it has pooped at least once this morning. (It spent the night in a box on shavings.) It seems a lot perkier, but that might be because it is stressed being in a crate in my kitchen. Any advice? Thanks. Janet

I am not sure what the disagreement was about but I am new here and I just wanted to ask a question:

At the 4-H competitions at the LSU Ag Center after a chicken is submitted and rated why do they kill the bird? I heard someone who raised a chicken, brought it to the show, they had to kill it and be examined for water content and various considerations. Anyone ever heard of that? It sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to me to raise a chicken and then have to kill it. Maybe it was a lie?

I have 2 cuckoo marans that are about 10 days old. I'm really excited for them to start laying. I'm the type that is excites for pretty.birds that lay pretty eggs, although I may have my kids show them at the county fair in August. I have another older chick, Penguin, who is about 3 weeks old that looks like a cuckoo, but I really don't know what breed it is because.my.son's class hatched a bunch of chicks last month and we got that one. I'll have to post a picture of Penguin to see what you guys think about his breeding. ;)

Ok. So what are these? I have a roo that looks like this and 3 hens like the one behind him. I thought golden salmon but Im hearing really bad black copper. These birds are actually prettier than most varieties to me. The partridge look, the gold breast with the black outlines on the feathers on the breast. Even the brown underfeathers and the partidge looking feathers on the shanks. Great dark eggs. Really thought they were something great and I already breed black, blue, and splash marans. Never had anything resemble these to hatch. Help!

More photos are needed and is it possible to get some close ups of both the male and the females?
Even if they were really bad Black Coppers the females shouldn't be red colored on the body. Makes me think there is more than one variety of Marans in these guys.
