Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have had some Marans lay pretty early here.... 6 months is on the late side for mine. But it will depend on the time of year and the sun too.

True true! I've heard everything from 16 weeks to 8 months. Temp, sunlight, diet and bloodline I imagine all must play a role.

I hadn't thought about it, but mine have been at POL in the winter, so that may account for their age

DMRippy posted a picture of one of her Splash Coppers on 1/27/14. Post # 47661. Here is the link:

I have copied and pasted it from her post:

She said that not all splash coppers express copper, but some do.

WOW I think I might have a copper splash. I'll take and post some updated pictures tomorrow. Many thanks!

OK, so here is Woodrow Wilson all grownup. What do you think splash copper??

Mr. Abraham Lincoln insists on getting in on the photo shoot.

I'd keep him.  That little bit of copper on the chest is outweighed in my book by his other traits.  Would like to see him standing in normal stance without his tail tucked as well as top and straight rear photos too.  Nice job.

Thanks coffee! Here's some better pics. I wish I could keep both. I may wait to see what the younger one looks like. It's tough right I don't know how to tell this young and I have a buyer that will give one of these Roos a great home. When u said "straight rear" photo would his backside be facing the camera? I wasn't sure so I didn't post ;) thanks again.

This is the OTHER roo. Roo 2 (Young one)
Not much coppering so far-just the hackles/neck-the older one had more copper at this age.. Still nice lacing?

Thank u again for opinions! My feelings won't get hurt.

Ditto! I got a straight run of 4; ended up with 3 boys and 1 girl.

I had the exact same luck lol. I was hoping at least one of the blue chicks would be girls but it didn't happen. I know who's eggs I'm using when I end up with a Broody lol. The whole reason I got them was for their dark eggs lol.

Mine are 13 weeks old now. I'd be SO happy to have eggs within 3 weeks lol.

Having hard time getting a good pict of these 2. The other 4 are really starting to show their copper...and very aggresive especially as a group. Here's what I have...11 weeks old.Trying to turn way!! LOL Neither of these are coloring up much. BUT...I swear one of them sounded like it was trying to crow...as I was penning the other 4 in a separate coop. If so...I may have gotten 1 pullet out of 9 chicks.

Quote: I don't really know what color you would call him. He is probably splash but the red it not normal for a Marans.

This is the second roo that has popped up with that odd coloring.

There was someone a long ways back that want to breed splash and splash coppers and if I recall that is the color they were going for in the coppers. It was way off but they didn't care so maybe those birds have been made and are being sold regularly.
