Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

One other thing...I am not into showing chickens. However, can anyone tell me how close to the breed standard "Uno" appears based on the pics? Just for curiosity more than anything else! Thanks

The Blue Copper Marans is not in the Standard but basically they should be like a Black Copper except blue where the black is. That said, your bird is young and will change. Her eye color should be bay and it looks pretty light in the photo, but can continue to change until laying age. She should have the copper color only on the hackle feathers and to the top of her head, but not down the breast like she has. There should be a slight slope to her back from neck to tail, her back should not be level (can't really tell from the pic). She appears to have excellent leg/foot feathering. Ideally, the blue color is a medium blue, not too light or too dark, with well defined lacing on the feathers. She should have a nice well rounded breast and width to the back, tail should be at a 45 degree angle. Ideally the underfluff color is grey, not white. Hope this helps. She is pretty, the main thing I see with her at this point is too much color on her breast.

I'm no expert by any means as I'm still new to the breed but it looks like she has too much copper on her chest. My Blue boy is the same way except much brighter orange on his chest. He won't be used for bedding though except olive eggers.

My BCM pullet just laid her first egg today, YAY! It was nowhere near as dark as I expected but it had very dark speckles all over it so I'm hoping her sprayer just isn't working full throttle yet and she surprises me with a beautiful super dark egg :)

Thank you Desertmarcy! I appreciate your reply and info! Too much color, huh? I would have never thought that could be an issue! Of course she is beautiful to us. As a matter of fact, everyone who sees her thinks she is our most beautiful bird and our flock includes Silver Laced Wyandottes, Speckled Sussex, Golden Campine, Blue and Black Andalusians, and Swedish Flower Hen! Again, thanks for your time!

Blue copper Marans have no standard as yet, but you can evaluate her based on Marans type. She has dark eyes at this point (might or might not change to the bay color), heavy feathering on her feet (BCM standard calls for "moderate" but since there are no feathers on the second toe that's good), copper leakage on chest (differing opinions), and nice darker outline on the blue feathers (this is desirable in other blue breeds). She seems to be a substantial pullet with good width and depth as well as overall balance and a nice tailset, though these camera angles suggest a pinched tail. I give these opinions because I'm learning and hope that those more knowledgeable will chime in if I'm seeing things incorrectly and help us all learn. I learned more from 4-H and being required to give oral reasons for judging placing than anything else. So please, more experienced breeders, correct me on my observations and/or things I missed. Mahalo!

Hi everyone! For those of you who raise Birchens.... how is their egg color compared to Black Coppers? Thanks!
My new pullets are just starting to lay. The first one has impressive color. Better than any other Marans .... other than the Coppers.

Thank you all for the replies and the critique on our prized girl! I will try to post back once she has grown up a little more and get a new critique. This was fun! Maybe there should be a critique forum or thread on here somewhere for posts like mine!

When the initial Standard was being drawn up it was stated by the Standard Committee that the shank feathers should be similiar to what the Langshan has. This Blue Copper female has what I like to see in my Marans.
Interesting info. I also prefer this type of feathering on my Marans. Do you find that the chicks with heavier shank/toe feathering are prone to second toe feathers? Mine are about 25% with a fuzz or two on the second toe but I haven't grown any of them out to full adulthood to see if that molts out.
