Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm feeling rather discouraged. It looks like out of the awesome dark eggs from all the great lines that I ordered a couple weeks ago, only one developed

I'm praying that it hatches. I had such high hopes.

Probably damaged in shipping.

They had to have been. They weren't exactly packaged well. Heck, the only came from 3 hours away from me! Honestly, I think the one that did develope was the extra one I was sent that wasn't packed in the egg carton with the others.

Packing makes a HUGE difference. I've never shipped eggs in egg cartons, but I have received them that way, and they usually don't hatch well.

Almost everyone I ship eggs to report back more than a 50% hatch, but I wrap each egg individually. I'm sure that makes the difference.

How was the extra egg packed? Was it in bubble wrap?

I put 38 eggs in the incubator 22 days ago, BCM and OE. I now have 22 babies hatched and a lot more have pipped! A wonderful success rate. I've done a lot of reading on incubating and it seems that the darker colored eggs do much better with less humidity and warmer temperature. I did 25% to 40% humidity the first 14 days then I took it down to 25% humidity till day 18. Then I took it to 60% humidity for lockdown. They started hatching on day 21. My temperature was around 101 to 102.some nights that were cooler it will drop down to 99.5. I would say humidity is the biggest factor in hatching these BCM and OE. Keep the humidity down. What I've read is these eggs are very hard and thick and are waterproof and maintain good humidity inside of them. I hope this helps

it wasn't bubble wrap but a foam packing wrap and it was just sitting beside the egg carton. There was crumbled newspaper all over the inside of the box too.

30 out of 38 hatched:jumpy That is a 79% hatching rate :celebrate BCM and OE. One had a hard time getting out and pipped all the way around and didn't make it:confused: . But other than that not to bad. I will check the other eggs and see if there were feartal.
