I am working on getting my Marans sorted out. I have more pullets than I thought. Nice egg color too. One girl is splash so she will be going out to the breeding pen as I need more Blues. I might only add blue copper pullets as I have a black copper roo. Not that I would toss a dark layer that is black copper. LOL I will try to keep my number of pullets down this year. Might keep a few just through spring and sell the rest and only keep 3-4 pullets.

This is my 2nd year hatching out Black Copper Marans. I am very disappointed this year because out of about 40 chicks, 4 have been Wheaten.

I am going to see if I can figure out which of my chickens is carrying the Wheaten gene.

My question, is: What should I do with the wheatens that hatch out this season? Sell them as brown egg layers? Tell people they are Wheaten Marans but not pure?

First you know your cock/erel is carrying wheaten. It takes 2 to make wheaten. Next I would raise them up and use them to test mate and find out who is carrying wheaten. Single mate them to a wheaten till you weed them out.

I don't know that much about wheaten marans but I would think they are PURE if they carry 2 copies.... they would breed true. Maybe someone else here has wheatens and can answer that question better.
